What's wrong with calling them The Parliament?

Or if you want something a bit raunchy, the Hooters, or Hooter Nation, or something like that?

If you want something a lot raunchier, how the Great Horny Owls?

While current students may not fully appreciate the name's origins, I don't see that as a problem. It's a name that can be explained if need be, but it is good on its own, in my opinion.

It's certainly got more tradition associated with it than the made-up canard of not graduating if you pass through the Sallyport after matriculation and before graduation day.

Damn, that is annoying! I don't know where it came from, or how it managed to take hold so strongly. It just sort of sprang up overnight and now we can't get rid of it. Yesterday I overheard a tour guide telling a group of high school students about it, perpetuating the myth.

In my day (late '90s) the tradition was merely 'bad luck' for passing through as an undergrad. Didn't stop people from using the Sallyport as a beer golf hole - though some people did respect the tradition and walked around Lovett Hall after making their shot through.

This does complicate the creative process - a slogan defining a foreboding environment for the visiting team, while not sounding completely silly when there are only a dozen bodies in the stands.

If Dr Lovett had not intended the arch to be a passageway, he wouldn't have had it built in the first place.

RE: Rice student section names
In all seriousness, the Parliament would be a good name for the student section. It's specific, proper and academic. It will allow for students to show up in powdered wigs and robes if they chose. Plus, it would give tv announcers for our games a bunch of puns to play with during the course of a game. Would go along as a great name with Tudor Fieldhouse.

But, according to this website, other monikers for a group of owls include the term "Congress".
