Definitely not age haha. It was a tradition that started in the late 90s I believe. And it's now one of, if not the most recognized tradition at Rice. It's the go-to tradition mentioned in news articles about Rice and tours. Just about every Rice student recognizes it (likely because there isn't much of a reason to pass through there anyway nowadays). It's become a special ceremony for students to pass through the Sallyport after graduating symbolize the end of their undergrad journey just like walking in at matriculation symbolizes the beginning. But I've found that a lot of alumni have a lot of disdain for this specific tradition which I don't quite understand.
My 4th year, I lived in an apartment near Hermann Park, and the driveway leading from Lovett Hall to the front gate was available for parking by commuter students. So I parked there a lot, and my route from there to the center of campus was right through the Sallyport, so I passed through that way often. I'm eternally glad to know that didn't prevent my graduating.

RE: Rice student section names
I drove through the Sallyport on a motorcycle at fairly decent speed really early (3 am) one morning. To the great consternation of the Campos (who never found me thank god.....). Junior year iirc.
Sophomore year I had inherited a postal service jeep from some seniors I knew the year before -- they had modified it (welded the top off) to a mobile destructo mobile after they bought it at auction for like a 100 bucks or something, and it had no registration or plates. They had to store it off campus due to the number of times mobile gizilchers were reported with it. The proviso was I had to get it out of the Southampton backyard they had stored it (some of them were living there oc).rning.
That jeep made it through the Sallyport as well, again really early in the morning. I had gotten tired of moving the darn thing eventually, so I parked it in the campus lot --- apparently the Campos noted it and were in the process of towing it when I went to my own car the next day. Officer Ken asked me if I knew anything about it there (it was next to my car) and I feigned ignorance. Officer Ken said they had been looking for the jeep for the last three years and it had been involved in a lot of drive by water balloons, and they had said it had been reported in the Sallypost the night before.
They knew I had known the people they suspected of its ownership for years. Two weeks later I was summoned to go see Fast Eddie (the proctor, with whom I had a number of involved conversations with over my years) about it. But again, nothing conclusive.
Last I saw of that vehicle was somehow someone got ahold of it yet again and used it as a prop for a MASH-theme party in the RMC.

Forget the Sallyport tradition… most people on this board would’ve been kicked out of Rice these days.

Or never admitted
Yep, exactly. Rule #1 in front of Fast Eddie --- never admit.
Rule #2 --- always opt for University Court instead of allowing Fast Eddie to determine guilt or set punishment.
Rule #3 --- always know the University Court 'prosecutor' and be a good beer buddy with them. And, it never hurt to do the same with the University Court justices.
