Is the P5 separation complete?
Interesting points nugget, so the p5 can't will not split completely, well then it's up to us non p5ers to build up our programs and fan bases and get much better recruiting so things can even out down the road...

RE: Is the P5 separation complete?
There won't be a power 5 split until:

1. The Alabamas and Ohio States stop making tons of money on home games with G5 and FCS teams (you think they schedule those games out of the kindness of their hearts?)

2. The Vanderbilts and Kentuckys and Purdues no longer need easier wins to help get them to bowl eligibility.

3. The Power 5 decides they are willing to send their non-revenue sports to travel to only other Power 5 teams.

Declining TV revenue just means there's even less of an impetus than before.

I think it goes further than that. I don't think the networks want it. By splitting the pie fewer ways---the remaining 40 or so "super programs" would certainly earn more---but would the networks?

A split as described where the top 40 or so big P5 programs break away would obviously leave the G5 behind. That's 65 fan bases. These would mostly be smaller fan base schools, so while they are half the total number of college fan bases---they probably only make up about 30% of the total college audience. You'd also be leaving behind about 25 P5 fan bases---again, mostly the smaller P5 fan bases---but they would still likely make up 25% of the remaining 70% of the audience commanded by the current P5. That's about 18% of the current total college football viewing audience.

So, whats that mean for the networks? It means that the potential audience that is interested in this new "top level of college football" drops by about half (48%). Does anyone think the networks are remotely interested in that happening in the era of cord cutting?

For those of us cheering on the TV bubble bursting, take a sec to realize the trickle down effect on G5 schools. More and more G5 programs are propping up their programs with payday games against the P5. Take away their big TV money, and those payday games go away or get slashed to bare minimum prices.

USM already knows how to survive on pennies. I'd love to live long enough to watch others have to try.

Not likely. The current P5s who don't get carried along will be joined by the G5 in major anti-trust action against the breakaway group. It won't be pretty for the breakaways, especially since their golden geese in the media are becoming an endangered species.

Over time courts have made private antitrust litigation more and more difficult. With some exceptions, the government itself approves virtually every merger and/or anticompetive activity.

Mostly true, but it seems like recently it hasn't been a straight rubber stamp. Aetna's merger with Humana was blocked and Anthem's merger with Cigna was blocked. Both in the health insurance space so it could be industry specific.
