If C-USA ever splits as is discussed here constantly, then yes, they would fit the new eastern conference.

RE: What Conference will Liberty end up in.
Since C-USA will not be able to split like the Big East due to the change in continuity rules, it would be necessary for an existing conference to clear space for a C-USA split.

If we try to cannibalize Liberty's current conference, the Big South, nine schools would need to be relocated, as no other realistic candidates for FBS remain in the conference. If we turn our attention to the Atlantic Sun, there will be at most eight members to relocate. In the Atlantic Sun, three schools, at least by enrollment, would be candidates for FBS by 2024: Kennesaw State, North Florida, and Florida Gulf Coast.

If we move Liberty to the Atlantic Sun ahead of the C-USA split, the Big South takes USC Upstate to get back to 10 members. When C-USA splits, the Big South takes Jacksonville and Stetson, pushing the Big South to 12 membership and the Atlantic Sun to 7 members. Add the incoming C-USA schools and the Atlantic Sun could have up to 11 of its 14 members playing FBS football:

NJIT (non-football)/Old Dominion
WKU/Middle Tennessee
Liberty/Marshall
North Alabama (FCS)/Lipscomb (non-football)
Kennesaw State/Charlotte
North Florida/Florida Gulf Coast
FAU/FIU

As the western remnant of C-USA reloads, it may create further movement that finds homes for the remaining non-FBS members. Lipscomb and/or North Alabama would likely wind up in the OVC when C-USA or the Sun Belt takes Eastern Kentucky and/or Jacksonville State.

Their location, mission, and worldview makes them a perfect fit for the PAC12.

As a more serious answer, I think eventually C-USA could split into more geographically friendly conferences and one of those could scoop up Liberty and UMass. Liberty can overcome it's religious stigma by being successful at the gate.

They likely will be independent for a very long time.

They may not make it Independent after a 3 year scheduling experiment and have to go back down.

They will be fine. They are a private school with an online presence that literally prints stacks of money. They can buy a 12 game home schedule at a million+ a pop if they have to. I suspect that's the primary reason they were allowed to move up as an indy---they have the financial ability to guarantee a full FBS qualified schedule and they could prove it in a court of law. The fact they will be announcing a full 12 game schedule just a few months after announcing the FBS move is proof positive they are here in FBS to stay. That said, I don't see any FBS conference wanting anything to do with them for a long time. They are just too controversial among university presidents.

Probably Indy for awhile. CUSA needs 2 West teams to have good regional divisions. The Sunbelt has spurned them and won't take them even if they are successful.

RE: What Conference will Liberty end up in.
1) I don't think you'll see any new FBS conferences organized because that would only dilute the pot of money from the CFP that the g5 conferences already split. Every new conference would split that already smallish pot another way. So, while CUSA and the SBC could re-organize amongst themselves, I don't look for CUSA to subdivide into two where there is only one right now.

2) CUSA is already in dire financial straights. They are on the verge of losing their conference media deal. So, unless Liberty somehow bolsters that sagging deal, Liberty won't get added and Liberty probably should examine their options carefully if they are invited. Jumping into a sinking conference likely isn't a great idea.

3) The Sunbelt is the obvious option, but may not have room or the inclination to add Liberty.

I'm guessing that Liberty remains independent in FB until the situation clears up.

The "S.E.A. The South Eastern Atlantic

"Charlotte (Final 4), Appalachian (3x nation football champion), Liberty (TV), ODU, JMU, Coastal Carolina (CWS champion), Georgia St., Georgia Southern (6x national football champions), FAU, FIU, (Basketball: UNC-Wilmington, College of Charleston).

Who cares about the central, eastern, mountain & pacific time zones.

The S.E.A. has champions, the coast, the metros, the mountains, and fertile recruiting. And the opportunity to create some rivalries

For Charlotte The "S.E.A." would eliminate five teams that are further away than the two Florida twins. For Charlotte those five far west teams would be replaced by five teams that the combined travel would equal one trip to UTEP.

If the TV money was still there I would love the CUSA as it is. If the TV exposurer was there I would love the CUSA as it is. The Golden Goose (TV) revenue is dead.

We'll take them in our conference.

Only a desperate conference would take LU, barring significant changes to their employment and admissions policies.

Many of those opposed to LU's policies aren't college football fans but are stakeholders in their university communities.

There's a reason why BYU plays as an independent. But for their policies, which actually are far more liberal than LU's, they'd be in the Pac 12.

The Sun Belt isn't getting raided. CUSA is full. And if CUSA loses any team, its likely to be a 'better' program, which will make the conference even less desireable as a moving program. CUSA isn't going to 16 teams until the CFP payout terms change. And if CUSA loses two of USM/Marshall/Rice....then why would any Belt team leave?

Right now, most of our teams find CUSA to be a lateral, at best, move. There's no more money in it for us. For the vast majority of our teams, moving to CUSA would get us no additional exposure, no additional TV revenue, marginally (at best) better basketball, the same or worse baseball, no increase in football, a million dollar exit fee from the Belt, and higher travel costs in a conference that is actually more unstable now than the Belt is.

I don't see LU in a conference anytime soon. If CUSA loses two teams, they most likely do NOTHING. I don't see the Belt taking anyone anytime soon (and if they lost Eastern teams, then NMSU would be added as a full member). The MAC isn't taking them - probably even if desperate - and the MAC is super stable anyway.

Remember, in most conferences you need between two-thirds and three fourths to gain admission. For LU, that's going to be very difficult. The only path is if CUSA gets gutted by the AAC, SBC, and MWC and gets into a desperate situation. That is unlikely at this time.

So most likely for LU....CUSA. But still pretty unlikely.

Agree. Also, there is another factor, other than big stacks of money, than makes Liberty uniquely suited to survive and even thrive as an independent. Liberty (like BYU), has their own national TV network.
