This does not mean that 7-5 teams get to choose before 6-6 teams, just that no 7-5 team will stay at home while a 6-6 team goes bowling.

Only the conference champ gets to pick their bowl. WKU chose Boca because it was the best for them. After that, the conference and its bowl partners work together to create the best possible situations and match ups.

Tech went on the record late in the season in saying it wanted the HOD. Besides the nearby location, Tech wanted to face a P5. However, when it started to become apparent that 4 B1G teams were going to the NY6, everyone realized that the B1G wasn't going to be able to fill the HOD. In 2015, the Big XII couldn't fill it, but the HOD tracked down an extra Pac-12 team (UW). In 2016, there were no extra P5s (the B1G, Big XII, and Pac-12 all had fewer teams than bowls, and the SEC and ACC had just the exact number). So it was obvious there would not be a P5 in the HOD. Similarly, the Big XII wasn't going to be able to fill the AFB.

So a trade occurred. C-USA's spot in the HOD, which by all indications was going to go to Tech (see below), was instead given to the AFB so that Tech and Navy could play. Remember that because North Texas was 5-7, every single 6-6 or better team had to be slotted first. Once that was done, since UNT had the best APR, they got to pick from what was left. That meant either the HOD vs Army or St Pete vs Miami (OH). They obviously chose HOD. That left the 2nd best APR 5-7 team (Miss St) to choose St Pete.

Tech's AD stated that he knew we weren't going to the HOD once 4 B1G teams were officially slotted in the NY6. His statements imply that had the B1G sent a team to the HOD, Tech would have gone.

Had the trade not occurred, Tech would have played Army in the HOD. Once all 6-6 or better teams were slotted, UNT would have had to choose from the AFB vs #25 Navy or the St Pete Bowl vs Miami. They'd likely have chosen AFB. So we would have had Tech vs Army and UNT vs Navy. All involved parties realized that Tech vs Navy and UNT vs Army would provide better matchups, and thus the trade occurred. Considering that Tech-Navy was won on a last-second field goal and UNT-Army went to OT, I'd say the trade worked perfectly.

TL;DR: The HOD didn't choose UNT, UNT chose the HOD.

I think our info is syncing up. Once Army was slotted to HOD and it was obvious it wouldn't be a P5, I was told La Tech did not want to go back to Dallas again since y'all had just been there, but Western had the key card on where they wanted to go. From the background I got on this Brohm wanted to go to Hawaii but the Purdue thing was happening at the same time so they chose Boca instead. That helped ESPN do the swap to put Tech in the AFB.

It was less because we had just gone there 2 years ago and more so the opponent. We wanted the best possible opponent but also close by. Normally, that would be HOD, but with Army being there, the trade just made the most sense.

Kind of surprising to me Brohm might have wanted Hawaii. I would have thought Boca would be the better choice (outside of HOD if a P5 was there). Regardless, I'd say things worked out well for WKU.

As for MTSU, I thought before the game the Hawaii Bowl was the best landing spot since it gave Stockstill the most time to get healthy (being it was the last C-USA bowl to be played), but alas it didn't matter in the end.

Anyway, regardless of how UNT got there, I don't expect them in the HOD two years in a row, no matter the opponent. Probably Tech or UTSA.

Heart of Dallas Bowl

According to Brant Ringler executive director of the Armed Forces Bowl

TIM SIMMONS: Obviously, Conference USA was ticketed with the game along with a Big Ten school. How did this matchup come about?

BRANT RINGLER: In the past couple years, you probably have noticed, the Conference USA championship has occurred, we received usually the champion or the runner‑up. And it was probably going to look to be that way possibly this year as well. But when we had an opening in the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces bowl game that we also control, we did work out an agreement with Conference USA to have LA Tech play in the Armed Forces bowl. Therefore, it allowed us to be able to slide in the University of North Texas into the Heart of Dallas bowl, which is a win‑win for all of us all around.

And then, when the Big Ten today played four‑up, basically, three in the New Year's Six games and one in the CFP, it allowed the opportunity for us to have Army play as their opponent. So we're excited about the matchup. We know that Army is going to bring a large contingency because the Texas area is one of their hotbeds. And, obviously, with North Texas here just up the road from us, we saw what they did three years ago and bringing in a contingency of fans.

We think we have a heck of a matchup not only on the field but also in the stadium. So we're very excited.

Also in this release...

Q. You mentioned a couple of times how many people in North Texas brought the last time they were in the Heart of Dallas bowl. How big of a factor did that play in your push to get them in here this year?

BRANT RINGLER: It's a very important part of the business. At the end of the day, this is a business. And so we wanted to make sure that we fill the Cotton Bowl as best as we can. It's a very large stadium. We know we're not going to fill it. It holds over 90,000 seats. We mainly try to fill the lower bowl.

We saw what North Texas brought last time. We felt like they have a great opportunity to do something similar to that again.
