That and I believe at the time; a GT alum was a top exec at Russell.

ALL DAY I DREAM ABOUT SOX

Cool story but I made 4 times my money on Nike in eight years. I'll stick with them.

Bad move.

RANDOM WALK

Trust me...I harvested some over the last year but I still have about 50% of my initial investment with them. Some of my best stocks are not even "Sexy story stocks".

WKU left RA early and signs with Nike for 5 years!! Looks like Nike replaced Rutgers pretty fast!! As a GT guy this tells me that Nike will not even be at the table once GT and RA end their relationship.. Also tells me that the reason why GT is still with RA, they can not find anyone to pay them the same as RA and they will lose money or take a pay cut with the next deal, either with UA or adidas...

"The announcement comes less than a day after WKU and Russell Athletic mutually discontinued their exclusive on-field sponsorship agreement, which will take effect on June 30."

I am Doubling Down on Adidas.... Why?? Adidas is putting a massive store near Atlanta and GT's baseball team uses some Adidas equipment already. Atlanta is a great market for adidas to be in!! UA is already with Auburn and GA State, if they wanted GT they could have had GT!! See WKU and NIKE deal!!

I agree with you Fletch. I think adidas goes with GT and there's no better time to be with the 3 stripes than right now.

From the Stingtalk Board USER COIT:

"Take it for what it's worth, but I met one of the GT tennis players yesterday at a USTA match, and his brother was sporting one of his Russell-branded shirts. He made a joke about how much his brother loves Russell, and I asked him what he had heard.

He said that they had heard it was between UA and Adidas, and it sounds like it is going to be UA. Nike was not mentioned. He had some pretty specific information"

For what it is worth we would be second ACC team wearing UA, as BC is currently the only team wearing UA.

Teams not wearing Nike:
ACC: Boston College-Under Armour (UA), Georgia Tech-Russell Athletic, Louisville-adidas, Miami – adidas, NC State-adidas

RE: What apparel company will Georgia Tech sign with?
Nuggets from the AJC: AD Todd Stansbury said he is in the early stages of gauging interest from Adidas, Nike and Under Armour and hopes to have a decision on the athletic department’s next apparel deal in the next few months.

“So that, one, recruits can know what’s going on, coaches can know what’s going on and we can start to make plans for whatever transition we need to make,” Stansbury said.

Stansbury is well aware of the marketing and design might that Nike would bring to a partnership. He has a relationship with the company from his time at Oregon State, a Nike school. He was executive associate AD when Nike went through a re-design process, including logos and colors, that debuted in 2013 after his departure to UCF. Nike was also the outfitter for UCF during Stansbury’s tenure as AD at the school 2012-15.

Upstart Under Armour made a splash last year signing UCLA to a record $280 million deal over 15 years. The company also has Notre Dame, Auburn and South Carolina under contract, along with its flagship, Maryland. Stansbury was teammates at Tech with Sammy Huntley, a vice president at Under Armour.

“I think it’s always helpful to have somebody that is in a leadership role, even if (Huntley) may not be directly engaged,” Stansbury said.

Tech also played a critical role in the story of Under Armour’s rise. Tech reportedly gave company founder and CEO Kevin Plank his first big sale in 1996, a deal that kept him from going broke. Under Armour is seen as being strategic in choosing its partners, and it’s conceivable that the company’s technical orientation could match well with Tech.

The brand has two ACC partners, Notre Dame and Boston College.

In recent years, Adidas has lost some big fish such as Nike, Notre Dame and Wisconsin, but its reduced standing could help Tech from a recruiting perspective, at least in basketball. Adidas remains strong in AAU basketball circles, and, to the extent that shoe companies and AAU teams exert influence on prospects to sign with colleges with the same apparel deal, having fewer Adidas colleagues could benefit coach Josh Pastner. The company also began supplying cleats to the Tech baseball team this past season.

Adidas’ ACC clientele – Louisville, Miami, N.C. State.

Interesting to note: the Tech athletics online store has 13 items from Under Armour, 12 from Nike and one from Adidas.

Stansbury undoubtedly will be interested in each brand beyond what it offers on the bottom line. He has placed a high priority on ensuring that Tech develops an identifiable brand , and its apparel partner can go a long way to that end. An apparel provider that is equally committed to elevating Tech’s brand is of primary importance, he said.

“I think when we do make a transition, there’s going to be a lot of excitement from our alumni and our base,” Stansbury said, “and obviously, we’ll have an opportunity to really do some things in Atlanta that we may not have been able to do before, and so I think that having somebody that sees that and wants to take advantage of that is going to be really important.”

Leader for GTech's new apparel deal

I remember when Russell was an "in brand" back in the 80's...it was taking market share away from Champion.

RE: What apparel company will Georgia Tech sign with?
Why a sports marketing expert believes Georgia Tech will go with Nike...

With a smaller fan base and football and basketball teams that aren’t consistently playing in national-spotlight games, Tech won’t command the deal that powerhouses like Clemson ($2.9 million annually) or Georgia ($4.1 million) have, both with Nike.

Jensen and his colleagues at the Center for Research in Intercollegiate Athletics at UNC developed a predictive model for the value of apparel contracts that incorporated the number of athletes in an athletic department, its average football attendance and total number of NCAA Tournament appearances by the men’s basketball team. By that formula, Tech’s value for the 2016-17 year was $2.1 million, ranking 47th nationally. That’s in line with Tech’s contract with Russell. The contract for this past academic year paid Tech $2.3 million ($1.35 million in cash, $950,000 in gear).

It would suggest that athletic departments perceive that Nike brings extra value to a partnership, likely the power and prestige of the Nike brand and its broad appeal to recruits, and also that Adidas and Under Armour have had to overspend to persuade schools to give that up.

They have slightly improved in the past two years but I still don't really care for Adidas' football uniforms. They often look very ill fitting and are not nearly as nice looking as what Nike or even Under Armour offers.
