“On the horizon is more live news video and enhanced video and audio streaming,” the release stated.

ESPN also plans to bolster its online presence.

I wonder what our TV schedule will be this year, if more game will be on the watchespn app instead of tv?

It's from the Fox News website. What did you expect? They cater to far-right conservatives who go there for the purpose of reading and discussing politics, not sports.

On a serious note ... did anyone notice ALL the college basketball reporters were let go including Katz and O'Neil. ... But it seems like they kept Joe Lunardi ... to keep perpetuating the 'one bid league' Tournament. SAD.

I missed this, Katz was "the guy" for college hoops, he was on all the time.

I brought this topic up because I was curious with ESPN bleeding money will this affect the MAC TV agreement. Will ESPN force the MAC to renegotiate? Will more games be on watchespn instead of the actual network?

ESPN is not bleeding money. The rate of profit just quit increasing exponentially like it had through the 90's and 00's. They are still a cash cow for Disney who is looking to just increase that stream some. Don't shed any tears for ESPN. Their staffing levels were very fat and to drop 100 people is hard on those getting fired, but will be barely noticeable by viewers. They had years and years of just doing whatever the hell they wanted and damn the cost because they were minting money. Now they are cutting some of the fat out of the budget.

hmm these articles state otherwise.
"According to The Wrap, “Cable networks, particularly ESPN, have been an albatross on Disney’s stock price even as the company’s two other major prongs, movies and theme parks, continue to perform well. As cheaper TV alternatives began to proliferate, ESPN hemorrhaged subscribers during the course of 2016 and is now at less than 88 million, compared with a peak of 100.1 million in 2011. At an estimated $7 per subscriber, that dip has been a substantial hit to Disney, especially considering media networks made up 49 percent of Disney’s profits during fiscal 2016.”

. Operating income at Disney’s cable networks division — primarily ESPN — plunged 11 percent compared with the same time the previous year. Disney attributed that drop entirely to lower ESPN revenue.”

Actually, that supports what I was saying. ESPN is still making a lot of money for Disney, they just quit making as much as Disney wanted. Disneys peoblem is they have other divisions that ARE losing money and the cable division is not carrying their water like they used to so they're turning the screws on ESPN. And rightfully so: ESPN really knows how to spend big chunks of cash and now they may not be able to buy everything they want. But they still make money, just not like they used to.

RE: Black Wednesday at ESPN
It almost feels as though ESPN was bidding against itself on employee salaries for years. Sports broadcasting is a very niche market and there can't be too many other places out there paying competitive wages to what ESPN is paying their "top talent". FS1 has stepped it up to become a true competitor but that's only in the last few years.

The time had come to shut down the ESPN medical clinic and get back to sports broadcasting.

Even after the layoffs, they're still on the hook for many bad contracts (The Longhorn Network). I'm not sure why they didn't cut ties with some bigger named commentators like Steven A or Mike Golik Sr.

Between the CBB & CFB seasons, do they have enough programming to support 3 + stations?

I was surprised that he got let go. He said that they told him bye bye and then wanted him to do the NFL draft in some capacity. Now I don't know where I'll get my Dallas Cowboys update every 5 minutes (and I want them).
