Rolleyes Bloodbath coming: ESPN layoffs
http://www.sportingnews.com/other-sports...vedncxtmfg

12 million subscribers lost in last 5 years. Peak 100M, now 88M

Wall Street driving this bus. Mouse going alongside

70 tv/radio anchors, analysts, reporters, online writers to be let go in coming weeks.

Some employees actively requesting pay cuts to avoid layoffs and loss of exposure.

Good luck y'all. My old company went through this a year ago. So hard to see good people getting walked out.

RE: Bloodbath coming: ESPN layoffs
Not that I want anyone to lose their job. I have lost a job in the past and know it sucks, but I do understand ESPN getting rid of some on-air talent. I've thought for quite some time there are too many talking heads on that network...too many commentators...too many anchors...too much everything. That's especially true of their radio hosts. Most of those people are interchangeable and don't really bring any sort of unique voice to the table. They change them often at that, I suppose, hoping that maybe this time we'll hit on the next big thing.

I hope though that a lot of these people land on their feet. It's certainly not their fault they're losing their jobs.

Since they haven't quantified subscriptions to ESPN for mobile devices and other forms of streaming the radical numbers of subscribers lost through cable is misleading. The economy has caused some. But ESPN gets the same fee for mobile devices and other forms of streaming. So the article is sensationalized and by competing networks. Keep that in mind.

As to talking heads some of them know nothing about the sports they talk about and need to be canned and ATU is correct as well because they do have way too many for any to seem that remarkable (Game Day excluded).

Nice guy but too much of an ACC homer.

McMurphy was the surprise so far, and there are some names I was expecting to see but haven't thus far.

He was solid.

I don't want to read too much into that, but is it possible we see a disproportionate amount of Big 12 reporters laid off because there soon won't be a Big 12 to cover?

Not surprised to see a lot of NHL people let go. ESPN doesn't have much of a reason to keep them in all honesty. Looks like they also may be standardizing their coverage of college sports by letting go several conference specific people.

Jayson Stark and Ed Werder, I was surprised by. They've been around a long time.

His tweet seemed a little bitter at that. I don't blame him for being upset, but it's not wise to burn bridges.

Seems to be a running theme so far. We're not seeing very many on-air personalities. We're seeing mostly journalists let go.

So is ESPN gutting the division that actually products quality news or are the bigger hammers just waiting to fall later in the day?

Otherwise, one would have to ask...is ESPN tone deaf or has our culture fallen so far that we prefer carnie barkers to real news?

We don't need any homers, SEC, ACC, Big 10 or otherwise.

Maybe he'll be hired by the ACCN.

Bingo! That's exactly right. I also noticed some numerable losses for the NHL. I wouldn't be surprised to see someone like McMurphy picked up by a conference network.

Reports are that ESPNU operations are moving to Bristol while SECN will remain in Charlotte.

Making room for ACCN or another sign of cost cutting?

I think ESPN will use Bristol as the ACC North and possibly Mid Atlantic studio, Charlotte for the ACC South and SEC East studio, and Dallas for the SEC Central and SEC West studio and for Spanish language broadcasts.

Espn must be reorganizing by evaluating their online content. I haven't really followed that in quite a while tbh. Most people are reading from specialty sites or writers these days.

Heck, a few years ago, podcast mania was all the craze; now there is only one left that I actually listen too

RE: Bloodbath coming: ESPN layoffs
BTW, since McMurphy did a decent job of staying up with realignment news, and since that has been a topic of great interest for many across the country, do you think ESPN might have realized that the need of that grasp is fading soon?
