The sport is growing in popularity here as well and a lot of current MLS players come from the ranks of American colleges. It's not a bad way to market yourself to a new audience and would be an inexpensive add as I believe all the SEC schools have Women's teams as it stands.

I'm not sure about the crossover membership you're talking about. It's intriguing, but it could get hairy.

Fun fact, Alabama and Tennessee are actually members of the Big 12 in Women's Rowing. I think Texas sponsors that sport as well. If the 4 TX schools come our way then I hope the conference starts sponsoring it.

The problem with starting men's teams is Title IX. While costs just to start a men's soccer team may not be that expensive, having to fund another women's team as well could be. Mixing the league members could be a way to minimize Title IX issues & others as well. I know that the ACC has gymnastics issues with having so few teams, this could help with that for an example. This would also maximize content & keep all of our programs under our combined roof with no further expense.

The B12 sponsors women's soccer only as well.

The whole Title 9 issue is a pain. But the SEC is deep enough financially that we could simply add men's soccer and then women's crew officially and be done. Do women in the ACC play lacrosse? If you do and we could gain more of a following with women's lacrosse then we could go that route instead of crew.

Do we play Women's Lacrosse? Carolina is the defending NCAA champion. BTW Carolina won both the Men's and Women's ACC Lacrosse championships today.

I believe Florida has a Women's Lacrosse team as well. Not sure what conference they're in though.

I wouldn't mind having both Men's and Women's Lacrosse in the SEC. That's at least some additional content for TV.

I know it's traditionally known as a sport for East Coast elites, but it's grown quite a bit in recent years. It will likely never reach the level of the big 3, but it could be up there with hockey and soccer before much longer. Loads of kids are playing it nowadays. Even some high schools in AL are playing it.

Honestly, that would probably be more cost effective than trying to add Men's Soccer or Women's Rowing on a wide basis. Part of the problem with Rowing is that you need a good sized body of water or a river nearby. Much easier to just build a lacrosse stadium.

Except, I don't think Mexicans watch lacrosse and they live for soccer.

Lacrosse is pretty expensive.
Teams normally have about 50 members, so travel is expensive and so is equipment.
12.6 scholarships for men 12.0 for women (soccer is 9.9 for men, 14 for women)
Rowing carries a whopping 20 scholarship limit which is the most of any men's or women's sport with the exception of football.

Yeah, but they're probably not going to watch too much college soccer. They'll be mostly fans of their local club teams along with some of the better European leagues. International competition will also hold a place.

American collegiate soccer is mostly a developmental league for MLS and it doesn't seem to carry a great deal of passion in most places. Not that I'm against adding it. It's just that pairing it with Women's Rowing to satisfy Title IX requirements might not the best use of resources.

Women's Lacrosse is probably a better investment if for no more reason than finding a suitable body of water for Rowing near many of our campuses might be difficult. And I doubt there's very much revenue potential. If we're investing in the Women's Lacrosse though then we might as well add a Men's league as well.

Part of my angle here is that lacrosse has started to have wide appeal among youth. I think it could be very popular in the not too distant future, perhaps even a revenue sport. It wasn't that long ago that fast pitch softball was a niche sport, for example.

Lacrosse combines an element of physicality with the open play of soccer. In a way, it's a warm weather version of hockey. If there ever comes a day when football either loses popularity or is considered too dangerous due to concussion issues then I could see lacrosse as a big part of what takes its place. I don't think laying the groundwork for that now would be a bad idea.

Yes, but there's also greater revenue potential. College lacrosse is on one of the ESPN networks fairly regularly. College soccer and rowing, by comparison, have not really garnered an audience as of yet.

My main point was that if we're going to add 2 sports to every school then it would probably be a better use of resources to add Men's and Women's Lacrosse.

I'm not at all against the other 2 mind you, but when you're adding 2 teams that play the same sport then your facility costs will be reduced as well. In addition, tapping riverfront or lakefront property is probably a lot more to maintain than a small stadium with a grass field.

Bloodbath coming: ESPN layoffs
The SEC could do something like this, add men's soccer & lacrosse with women's lacrosse & field hockey &/or fencing. Would these numbers add up to satisfy Title IX?

I think they should start with men's soccer and women's lacrosse. They already have 2 schools in each - South Carolina and Kentucky men's soccer play in CUSA while Vanderbilt and Florida women's lacrosse play in the Big East.

Start out with Vanderbilt and Florida men's soccer and Kentucky and South Carolina women's lacrosse. Then add from there to reach at least the minimums.

Perhaps do this in a few other sports as well. I believe only 2 or 3 schools have gymnastics in the ACC, they could join the SEC. If any SEC teams pick up LAX, they could join the ACC. These may not help out in Mexico but could be beneficial to our bundled networks stateside.

I also think we should add Men's Soccer. The sport is growing in popularity here as well and a lot of current MLS players come from the ranks of American colleges.
