EMU announces new athletic facilities plans

Big, big project that is hard to put one's arms around:

1). All sports which were at Bowen Field House on the main campus moves to the West campus where Rynearson, Convo, baseball, soccer and IPF are.

2). The much disliked track at Rynearson will be moved and it will surround the new soccer field.

3). The new IPF will be awesome and will feature a huge jumbotron and suites in the end zone. That will be awesome. No longer will there be a puny video scoreboard far from the field (because of the track).

4). The indoor track will become a gem and presumably the best in the MAC.

The reported cost is around 35M.

Wow! Impressive. Anybody who hasn't clicked on that link and viewed the fly over and rendering should. This is going to really do wonders for EMU.

Pretty much everybody but Kent is making football improvements. I don't think Kent intends to continue MAC football to far out.

Thanks for catching it. I missed it.

I'm not sure 'worst to first' is an realistic goal but 'worst to hopefully (near) first...' is.

I assume the goal is 'all green' on the scoring matrix.

I should mention that our interim AD, Christian Spears, used to be at NIU and know what they did with their project... NIU would be ranked in the top quarterile of MAC facilities.

Akron football has had the best facilities as this metric states over the past ~8 years, meanwhile, our football program has been among the worst in the MAC over that span. Our basketball program has the worst facilities outside of maybe Kent in the entire MAC, meanwhile, we've been top dog in the MAC over that same time period.

I feel that goes to show you programs get more bang for your buck spending on coaches than what you do by building fancy facilities.

NIU announced its master facility plan two, almost three years, ago now and there has been no progress beyond that. The current fiscal issues and lack of state budget in Illinois for the last three years has held us up from doing anything. While NIU as a university struggles to find ways to make cuts due to lack of state funding I guess the athletic department feels it would not be proper to start building athletic facilities while university staff and professor positions are being cut or left vacant.

Hopefully reality matches the fancy drawings, not only in construction of the facilities but also the butts in the seats. Keep winning like last year and the fans will come.

I always thought EMU's facilities were decent because Rynearson has a good layout.

I guess the bells and whistles aren't there as much behind the scenes.

What Rynearson's 'advantages' are intangibles:

GREAT LOCATION. I can give directions without GPS or a map. Plenty of free parking. After the game, head south on Hewitt to Washtenaw Ave. where there are plenty of fast food places to eat. Then head to U.S. 23 to go north (toward Flint) or south (Toledo) OR head south to I - 94 which will take you to the airport or Detroit or Kalamazoo.

Fits beautifully with the Convo. The Convo is such a beautiful building.

And, of course, for Convo events, parking right at the door.

The weakest part (beside the track inside Rynearson) is the football building, scoreboard, etc.

They will, obviously, be replaced by state-of-the-art buildings, scoreboard, etc.

To me, once Rynearson is made a state of the art football stadium, with suites, beautiful jumbotron, etc. etc. EMU might have the best overall facilities in the MAC.

Bingo!!! Of course facilities help recruit, but the coach is the biggest draw for a prospective athlete. My 6'10 Highschool friend back in the day signed with a smaller school, that had awful facilities compared to some of the bigger schools that offered. When EMU dominated the MAC in Basketball, we played in dilapidated Bowen field house but we had a first rate coach.

I am very proud that EMU will invest in the facilities! Of course, the best combination is great coaching and great facilities.
