OL John Kurtz transferring from football team
John Kurtz tweeted this afternoon that after graduating this semester, he will be transferring elsewhere to play his 2 remaining years of eligibility.

The graduate transfer rule is making redshirting obsolete.

Between jucos who used up eligibility and transfers I think we have now lost about half of that 2014 class that Boone, Gilbert and Moore were in.

I hate the new 5th year rule, especially in football. Why would anyone want to redshirt a player anymore if they are going to get to go and spend their most productive year elsewhere?

Remember sometimes you give sometimes you get.

The rule actually makes a lot of sense to me, from an education standpoint. If you are going to get a second degree, it makes sense to get it from a different university so you have two sets of alumni to draw upon.

Perhaps if it was the true impetus for the transfer. The NCAA claims that 2/3 of grad transfers are not completing that second degree. If accurate that suggests the rule is being used primarily for athletic rather than academic motivations.

I had to chuckle at the one response that said "You'll look great on the Redhawks"...

I wish the man well. (Except if he ends up at MoO U...)

So what? Good for them. P5 schools trade tuition and perks for indentured servitude so the money can continue to roll in. I think any kid that graduates within 4 years and exhausts eligibility should have the right to an automatic transfer for 2 years somewhere else to get a graduate degree.

You do the academic work and get worked like a dog for sports you should expect a 4 year degree and a graduate degree for your trouble. Why should fans care otherwise?

He doesn't appear at all on the participation chart from last season. Page 15.
