Statesboro Named One of America's Best Communities
Statesboro took home 3rd Place in the America's Best Communities competition. The competition focuses on revitalizing America's rural cities and many cities from all over the country submitted their revitalization plan to be judged by a panel.

Three years ago Statesboro submitted our project called The Blue Mile which is a section of Main Street that connects Sweetheart Circle, the grand entrance of Georgia Southern's campus, with the court square of downtown. It's focusing on revitalizing that part of town and making it an attractive place for business to expand into.

Statesboro took home third place which comes with a 1M dollar prize to go towards the project. GDOT also pledged $450k to go toward the project.

You'll need a lot more than $1.45M to turn that hole around. Good luck.

Out of 350 cities across the USA, Statesboro is in the top 3. Unfortunately for Boone, you have to be a city to submit a plan. Good luck to Boone in the mountain hamlet division.

GS is kicking money as well and they already have a ton of money in hand. This was just a bonus but thanks for chiming in. 07-coffee3

the Blue Mile project will hopefully do a lot to grow support for the university within the city, and help join the two together. It's a great plan and could pay off greatly for both

Statesboro is an extraordinarily proud community. For a small town in the deep south with nothing much to offer geographically or from just about any perspective they've created a nice place to raise a family and put down roots. Just a couple of examples:

Bike riding trails through the country side with periodic resting stations:

It is getting there but still a long way to go. The old part of town needs anchor cluster of businesses to pull folks back that way. Of course a really nice bar or two would do wonders down town but in Statesboro and Bulloch County they do everything they can to keep that out.

Yes. There was a state and or federal grant program a few years back for just this type of project. I think there are several similar ones in our area and there may be plans to try and connect them all in some fashion.

Part of the rails-to-trails program. You can use the traillink website to find trails near you.
