Gonzaga-within American's reach?
Gonzaga HC Mark Few mentioned its basketball program could travel around the country if needed to.

When Big East expanded 2011, San Diego State was invited to Big East

East? Because most Big East programs are on the East Coast. Sounds crazy? San Diego is in the south west corner, Pacific coast

Gonzaga is in the elite club without a significant conference. I, personally, think that if Travel is not a concern, Gonzaga and American could have some mutual interest (similar to Wichita).

Our Basketball programs are on the rise, big time. Look at the coaches we have in this league.

UCF- uprising Jonny Dawkins, biggest turnaround
Houston- Kelvin Sampson, former Houston Rockets assistant HC
Memphis- Tubby Smith, enough said. AP coach of the year(2003)
Tulane- Mike Dunleavy sr. Former NBA Coach of the Year
Temple- Fran Dunphy, winningest Head Coach in Big 5 history
Tulsa- Frank Haith, took over Tulsa from Mizzou
SMU- Tim Jankovich, Coach of the Year, American
Cincinnati- Mick Cronin, enough said
UConn- Kevin Ollie, NCAA Champion
Now we are even better with Marshall's Wichita State.

American is a very good Basketball League, very very good.

Can American Basketball develop a winning identity around college world? We can even get ahead of our Football programs and make Basketball a Power League. It will only help our P6 initiation and vision.

Back to my point of the message: Is it far reach for Gonzaga to be in American?

Yeah, it's a reach all right. I've been to Spokane. For those who want to give me the old "it's only a few hours away on an airplane"......I'll ask this instead, Have you ever been to Spokane in the winter? If you like living in airports, I suppose it's fun.

No, Hell no. They aren't an institutional fit and too far away. Maybe if BYU is added but with that said, nothing is forever with Gonzaga and you could be adding a school that in 20 years will resemble the deadweight in the A-10.

Couldn't agree more. The logistics would be a nightmare. They have an arena of 6,000. Great basketball, great story, terrible fit.

for football only.

If for some crazy reason they did want to join a far flung conference it won't be the AAC, it will be the New Big East. They're a perfect institutional for there, not here.

Unless BYU comes calling, which they won't, no more expansion, just stick with what we have and build an identity around that. It's not that we don't have enough really good, national basketball programs and need Gonzaga, it's just that many of those suck at the moment.

BYU only gets about $5-6 million from their ESPN deal I believe. If we get more than that then maybe we can persuade them. If they joined up with us we'd intrinsically become more valuable and then with our forces combined we could get an even bigger raise hypothetically speaking.

Gonzaga would never do it. They have one revenue sport in men's basketball.

They don't make enough to pay for their non-revenue sports to travel to south Florida for games. It's never going to happen.

That would be a great move for the mwc and gonzaga would no longer have to worry about st Mary's, since they would run the mwc (sorry, sdsu).

Plus BYU gains membership in that coveted P6 club.

That's true... Gonzaga *Can* move into Mtn. anytime they feel like it.
The fact that they haven't already done so is strong indication they aren't interested, IMHO.
