I know we can't afford the prime buy games, but can we at least find teams that finished in the top half of the MEAC?

While I'm not sure this is the case, there is a chance that one or two games could be scheduled for them in conjunction with the Cayman Islands Classic.

If we have to host a couple of turds related to the tournament, we don't have to pay them anything, right? It's an 8-team tournament with an already weak field, so I would hope not. I know our 4-game exemption is fulfilled with the 3 Cayman Islands games and the Florida game in New Jersey.

We need to find 2 or 3 quality buy games or else our non-conference SOS is going to be over 100 again, which = likely not getting a top 4 seed.

Not entirely sure how it works. Also not sure we will have any home games based on the Cayman Islands Classic, we'll see.

The difference between them and us is they have regional rivals who are willing to play them. I would love it if we could get teams from around us like Oklahoma, Okie State, Baylor, etc. but alas, we have a state school with no testicles up in Columbus, another in Dayton that doesn't want to play us OOC, and Kentucky, IU, and Purdue who for some reason act like we don't exist.

Agreed-- although I think we are the one snubbing Dayton (heard Mick admit as much in a gathering of Bearcat fans--- but I have also heard Bohn so he is trying to get it on the schedule).
The schools in our region figured out long ago the best way to keep UC from growing their casual fan base is to act like they don't exist. This way, the Purdue's and Illinois' of the world can beat their chest and claim they are better than we are (despite having a weaker team and worse record) because they play "tougher competition. And the people here buy this line too.
I really envy schools like East Carolina in football who get to play NC State and Virginia in football every year, Houston who always gets to play the Texas schools OOC in football and basketball and Memphis who gets to play Ole Miss (just a short drive away in Oxford, MS). It seems the only schools who want to play us are in the PAC-12 or someone a little further out from our footprint in Nebraska, Mississippi State and Florida.

The problem isn't the top end of our schedule. Our top 6-7 games are usually good. It's the buy games that kill us.

Last year the combination of OOC plus everyone in the conference besides SMU being garbage killed us. Subbing 2 games against a top 10 Witchita instead of some of the AAC bottom feeders makes a massive difference even with our dollar store buy games.

I wouldn't mind playing UD, as long as we don't fool around and lose.

It is definitely UC who won't play Dayton. Hard to argue about OSU when UC does the same thing to UD.

RE: UCLA / Florida / 2017-18 Basketball scheduling
If OSU will finally play us now that they seem to have a coach that is willing, I say we play both them and Dayton once. But we would need to pull out ALL the stops, dust off the playbook and actually run some offensive plays, and be at 100% all night. We can't be soft and have our signature sluggish start. Go hard and play with no fear at all. A loss to either UD or OSU would sting worse than anyone else, even X, since we are guaranteed a chance every year to put those fools in their place. We need to leave no doubt that we swing the biggest stick around Ohio.

Yeah... once I realized that was the case a while back, I ceased being pissed about OSU and UK big-timing us. It's a shame the way the schools in this region treat each other. If schools in Indiana can play each other, there's no reason why schools in Ohio can't. I doubt that playing Butler every other year has had any negative effect on Indiana and Purdue.
It's been discussed here before, but Ohio's version of the Indiana Crossroads Classic would be OSU vs. X and UC vs. UD one year, OSU vs. UC and X vs. UD the next.

We should be warned not to equate willingness to schedule with doing so with terms that are fair to both parties. I'm sure OSU has been willing to schedule UC for some time, but only with games at OSU. If they can agree to a home and home or a Ohio tourney on a neutral / rotating floor each year, then I'm all for it. If not, OSU can go pound sand down a hole.
And, yes, we should be willing to schedule UD and should be willing to do the same as shown above. And when we visit UD, we need to win or we can't complain about our perception. (UD is not a bad team.)

There's a huge difference between Indiana and Ohio.
In Indiana:
1) All 4 are in Power Conferences. The Crossroads Classic didn't start until Butler joined the Big East.
2) The least powerful fanbase (Butler) is in the only big city in the state. So even when Butler was small-time, the more powerful teams didn't mind playing de-facto homes games at Butler.
3) Butler was willing to schedule 2-for-1 series with IU and Purdue in the past, creating a tradition of in-state rivalries. (I highly doubt that UC would consider such an offer from OSU)
4) There's a legitimate neutral court that is perfect for making it a big-time event.

Maybe that's the case today. But we haven't traditionally ducked them. Since 1950, we've played Dayton more than all but 5 other programs (Louisville, St. Louis, Xavier, Memphis, Miami).
We've played Dayton 17 times since 1990.

It really pisses me off to. I'm really tired of Mick being scared of other schools. Maybe we should all email Bohn about the fan's desire to play UD.
