Saved his family buckets of money they don't have to spend on travelling, food, hotels, etc. Honestly do not know how Caupain's Mom made all of those games.

His mom is a UC alumnus, so I'm certain their family does well! However, all kidding aside, if money is tight for any family (honestly even if it's not tight), I have to believe our Full Cost of Attendance stipend, has to be another tool in CLF's tool belt that he would certainly use. Plus saving money on traveling to games...all these things add up quickly in the "Pro" column of any evaluation.

Extended Time with Walk-On Zack Tobler

Tobler and his family helped on and off the court
Quote:Tobler’s parents, Liz and Matt, also became friends with Renee Caupain, the mother of UC point guard Troy Caupain.

“His mom was coming to every game,” Tobler said. “She was driving up and then she would drive home right after the game or she would stay at a hotel. She would always sit next to my parents. My mom talks to everybody. They got to talking and they became friends and she said, ‘That’s crazy, you shouldn’t have to be staying in a hotel twice a week or whatever it is.’”

Now when Renee Caupain drives to Cincinnati to watch Troy play she stays at the Tobler house in Ft. Wright and sleeps in Tobler’s vacant bed.

Cleveland taking notice of "monumental get", albeit through OSU glasses:

Malik Vann, teammate of Jackson Carman, commits to Cincinnati: What that means for Ohio State

Love the last comment about keeping the second tier kids in Ohio rather than another BIG school. The hubris from some of these fans is delusional. Vann second tier? Kiss my azz.

Well for what it's worth, Vann didn't have an offer from OSU. Don't know why, but for some reason they didn't want him.

I've got a good feeling about Aeneas Hawkins... and I think it may even happen this week.

I saw that. He was good enough for Alabama, so pretty sure that makes him an elite athlete.

Vann is a legit player and going to be fun to watch.

I'm sure OSU's approach on Vann was going to be the slow offer. If an Ohio player in on their board but they only plan to take 2-3 at that position and he is slotted at say 5-8 they will wait until later in the senior year. If he blows up then he gets a late offer. If their top targets go elsewhere they make a late offer. Typically Ohio kids are willing to flip late if they get an OSU offer or delay declaring if an OSU offer is still possible. UC made the right move and formed a relationship.

The talk up here is that Asamoah is the same approach. Pretty confident that he will be there whenever OSU bothers to make the offer. Pretty sure Fickell is going to keep building that relationship and it would be sweet for UC to get a commitment.

I think the key with recruiting these days is to get the first couple. In our case, White. Then those players have an enormous amount of influence, enough (combined with Fickell and his staff) to turn into what is happening right now.

Agree, and I don't think we ever saw commits recruiting other targets like this during any era of UC football, Kelly included. I think Fickell is writing the textbook on recruiting here at UC.

The head of my condo association who shares the other half on my condo outside Ann Arbor is a HUGE Michigan State alum. They were so disappointed last season they offered to let me replace the association's Michigan State flag on the main flag pole with my UC flag.

Can't wait until the guy gets back from wintering in Florida to see what he thinks of UC now.

That's my sense as well. It seems this cohort of recent recruits has formed a common bond and that may really reinforce their commitment to UC and to one another when some P5's start turning up the heat closer to signing day.

It makes sense too. If you're the only 4 star committed to UC (or another G5) there would be a lot of peer pressure to join another local star at an Oklahoma or Tennessee. Fickell seems to have flipped this scenario by getting in early on some local blue chippers and making it socially acceptable for the others to commit here.

He is using the fact that Cincinnati is such an inter-connected city, with the parishes, youth sports, and the overall Cincinnati State of Mind to his advantage more than anyone before him.

Yup, and it's very clear that Fickell has known this approach would work for years. Explains why he threw his name into the coaching search after sitting in the background for a few years.

IMHO, Fickell threw his hat in the ring because Meyer was just about ready to dump him. They were not on the best of terms.

Maybe this is true Chris and I don't know nearly enough about the dynamics of the OSU program to contradict you, but it would surprise if this were the case for a few reasons:

1. Nearly every Buckeye fan I know had nothing but great things to say about Fickell and were disappointed to see him leave (though happy for him that he is now a head coach).
2. Meyer has consistently had high praise for Fickell and repeatedly mentioned his decision of keeping Fickell on when he took the job being one of his best.
3. If the Meyer / Fickell relationship had run his course and Meyer was ready to dump him, why have him coach the playoffs? Meyer could have easily said... Good for you Luke. Head down to UC now and get started with your new job. Nobody would have questioned it if Fickell did that and Meyer could have moved on quickly.
