These games are DOA.

Neither the city nor the county have funds to renovate another sports facility. Paul Brown Stadium already takes an oversized portion of the county's budget.

Nederlander owns the arena. Not sure why public funding would be involved. I suppose government could enable the financing vehicle and support access and utilility issues, but beyond that, the owner should be on their own.

I suspect The Port Authority could help by selling Revenue Bonds. So I think you are spot on. Voters in Hamilton County would tar and feather anyone wanting to pass a tax for the US Bank Arena clowns.

If only PBS would have been constructed as a domed stadium this would not even be an issue as Cincinnati could then have hosted an NCAA Final Four.

If Nederlander wants to host the games in Cincinnati in 2022, they should just tear down US Bank Arena and buy one of the paddlewheel riverboats and try to duplicate when teams played early season games on a Naval carrier.
We can serve up some Cincinnati style to a national audience on the Ohio River and Nederlander will never have to update their facilities beyond the 19th century. It's a win-win for everyone, at least until FC Cincinnati expresses interest in updating the riverboat to play MLS-specification soccer on it - then all hell will break loose.

Bill Cunningham had someone from Nederlander on at lunch. The plan is to tear down US Bank Arena and build a new arena. Of course that plan is contingent upon getting money to do it from the city/county(or counties).

Without a major tenant this is DOA.

Edit: Hell, even with a major tenant this is probably DOA if it needs public money.

I mean they wanted the University of Cincinnati to subsidize their rebuild... no shock they want the city to do it now.

Agreed, no one politically, or the voting public is going support it even with a major tenant.

This is all quite comical. The pot calling the kettle black as far as renovation funding is concerned on this board....is the Nippert remodel paid for yet? How about the Shoemaker rebuild?

Seems those are both in the red at present... why not have a 1st class arena on the Riverfront? We can use the same logic that many on this board used for the Nippert upgrade...build it and they will come.

You can't have it both ways gang.

It's probably comical to someone with no understanding of where the money comes from, or no ability to read the actual thread. If the Nederlanders wish to go out and raise money for a new arena in a manner that doesn't involve asking taxpayers, more power to them.

Nippert and 5/3 were both privately funded.

Nederlander, one of the largest theatre and musical venue operators in the United States, is trying to rope Cincinnati and Hamilton County taxpayers into paying their business expense of bringing US Bank Arena into the 21st century (and at a potential cost greater than Nippert and 5/3 combined AND doubled). It's a classic "privatize the profits, socialize the expenses" maneuver that would make Mike Brown proud.

The difference between these two concepts is night and day.

If this concept eludes you, I suggest sitting this one out.

I sure hope the tide is turning. San Diego and St. Louis said no to the NFL. Los Angeles is getting an NFL stadium with no public funding.

But there's still several stadiums being constructed with public funds:
Las Vegas is contributing $750 million to the Raiders' stadium
Atlanta/Georgia is contributing $600 million to the Falcons' stadium
Arlington is contributing $500 million to the Rangers' new $1 billion stadium

Cobb County (outside of Atlanta) paid $300 million - about 1/2 the total cost - for a new stadium that replaced the Braves ancient 20-year old stadium. Arlington is replacing a 23 year old baseball stadium. This pretty much means that Great American has 5 or 6 years left....

Nippert private funding, 5/3 private funding.

If US Bank can get pledges and box sales to raise money, great.

I find the whole thing crazy. Nederlander buys a dilapidated building and is trying to get anybody to do the heavy lifting of fixing it and making it valuable for them. No thanks.

Id love for us to have a downtown arena to get the big arena shows but without a regular tenant it doesn't make sense and it certainly doesn't make sense to build a building for a private company. There aren't enough shows and special events between the 12,000 we will hold at 5/3 and the 17,000 US Bank could hold to make that even remotely worth it.

Anyone have an idea of what the net worth of the Nederlander Organization is?
