Chris Jans Officially NMSU Head Coach
Thought I'd make an official thread. Press conference will be broadcast on Mark Rudi's twitter. What is everyone's thoughts? I personally think this will turn out to be a great hire for NMSU. Sure he made a really bad mistake but everyone deserves a second chance. His basketball resume is incredible and Wichita State fans speak highly of him. I believe Weir got outcoached last year by Barnes, Marjele and even Pope. I think if Bopp was hired he would've been outcoached as well. The one massive negative is Bopp will probably be headed with Weir to UNM as part of his staff. Jans might have a player revolt on his hands because all the players wanted Bopp.

Press conference at 4 PM PST here.

RE: Chris Jans Officially NMSU Head Coach
Not sure how this will turn out but from what I've read basketball wise might be a decent hire off the court he is a pr nightmare.

He only has 1 year of D-1 coaching experience went 21-12 and got Bowling green to the CIT. He was a great Juco HC won something like 78% of this games as the HC.

Not sure how others feel and I know the timing of Weir leaving screwed NMSU over in getting someone better I think but I don't think the rest of the WAC will look at a Jans ran team right the bat and worry. NMSU is still a talented team but at least with Weir the program didnt really change to the worse it was looking as it they were one there way to raise their profile a little bit. With Jans will Mom's want their sons to play for a guy who treated women the way he did in a bar?

Jans knocked that press conference out of the park. You can see how he would've impressed in an interview. I would have to think though Bopp is on his way to UNM with Weir now.

Really? It seemed pretty vanilla to me. Either way, NMSU doesn't need a coach who will win press conferences. They need a coach who will win OOC, WAC, WACt, & NCAA tournament games.

There is a lot of time between now and November for him to get/have his team ready. Best of luck, Coach Jans.

To me he came across as very genuine and remorseful. I think Jans will probably do that with his impressive on court record. Bowling Green sucked forever and he got them over 20 wins in 1 year.

I'd be interested to see how the same poll would do on a NMSU forum like Aggie Alert.

Ok, I just voted and I voted yes, but its a guarded yes vote, an...optimistic.... vote for my Aggie/WAC...brothers (and sisters, if there are any on this board). I do think he has a good coaching pedigree. But, that doesn't mean the team chemistry will be conducive to wins, despite a good recruiting class. Oh Im sure NMSU will still be a very good team. We will see if it gets them to where they want to be.
I've seem it a bunch with baseball (heck, Macaluso was a classic example of a coaching change that negatively changed chemistry) With Bopp, more of that chemistry (like this last year) had more a chance of remaining as it was last year. Jans will bring in new dynamics, maybe positive, maybe negative. We'll see.

Early Regular season predictions

NMSU
CSUB
GCU

I think that will still be the order but this years WAC tournament anything could happen. I could see all of the big 3 winning it all or winning the regular season.

I voted yes for Jans. I think the guy can coach. The question is can he recruit at the same level (or better) that the Traitor had us rolling.

Voted yes, from what I see he seems to be a good coach and possibly a steal for NMSU. I'm sure the guy would have a better job by now if he didn't have that incident at Bowling Green. As Aggie fans we can look at that incident in 2 different ways. I think it got us a coach that we wouldn't be able to get if it didn't happen.

Ok, yah, saw that but its cryptic. Was he not retained by Jans, or did he just resign because he wasnt hired, or did he go with Weir?

Nobody knows yet but 99% chance he went with Weir. Assuming we will find out tomorrow.

I like the hire. I believe everyone deserves second chances. I believe that bigger schools will hesitate to hire him if he is successful, so we could have him at NMSU for a while.
