Thinking of driving up to Boone to spend the weekend when our baseball team rolls into town in a couple weeks. Any recommendations while I'm there?

Would cross off another city in my quest to visit all 12 SBC members at some point.

Hey Chiefsfan,
Definitely take a ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway and take in some of the scenic views just about 10 minutes or so from Boone. Downtown Boone (King Street) is pretty nice and has some good eats and shops. Go up Stadium Drive and look at Kidd Brewer Stadium and see if our new video board has been delivered yet :) For a great view, ride over to Blowing Rock and eat at Canyons Restaurant (you can see all the way to Tennessee and Virginia depending on clearness of the day). 04-cheers

If you have kids Tweetsie Railroad is a must do. Downtown Boone & Blowing Rock are great to spend some time walking around looking at different shops. Take a trip south on the Blue Ridge Parkway to Moses Cone Memorial Park (milepost 294). Here are a few websites to help you plan. Have a great time in The High Country!

Check out Appalachian Mountain Brewery and Booneshine Brewing if you're on the hunt for some high quality beer. (Ignore any and all recommendations for the beer at Lost Province)

The Cardinal is the best spot for burgers (and excellent bourbon) in town. They have your standard beef patties as well as various game meats: bison, boar, emu, chorizo 50/50 patties, elk, lamb, etc.

The top of Howard Knob is a short drive from downtown and has panoramic views of campus, the town and surrounding areas.

While you're at the game head down the hill to right field. A quality group of App fans usually watch from that vantage point.

^ Good advice. I might add:

Cobo (Sushi)

Over Yonder (delicious, in Valle Crucis) - Check out the original Mast General Store if you go to Vallle Crucis . Also, get a fishing license and hit up Valle Crucis park for easy mode trout fishing. It will be catch and release only water during the month of May. Artificial lures with single hooks only.

By the way, once you're near the High Country, you might think you took a wrong turn. The Florida license plate migration will be in full swing by next month.

Safe travels. 04-cheers

Do Grandfather Mountain. You can drive to the top where there are lookouts, native animals, a theater with informative videos, hiking, and the swinging bridge. You can spend as little as a few hours there or make a day out of it.

Deliverance takes place in Georgia, right?

Either way, i'll take the sound of banjos over turntables and techno anyday.

Last time I was there for baseball, I rented a cabin in the mountains for about the same price as a hotel.

There's a diner right down the street from the Courtyard that has great hash and eggs for breakfast.

RE: App State Fans
Gonna second those thoughts about grabbing a cabin/mountain house off AirBNB or VRBO instead of a hotel. Nothing wrong with the hotels, but you get more for your money at cabins.

Also gonna throw out a couple suggestions for food/drink:

Tapp Room is a great place. Really good burgers/tacos/bar food, and drink specials. Right across from the basketball arena and basically on campus. Tank's Tacos and Tequila is right next to it, and while I haven't been there, I've heard good things.

Our baseball stadium is at the top of a pretty massive hill, so nowhere is within "walking distance" really (although I did the walk quite a bit while in school) but Rivers Street Ale House, The Local and Cafe Portofino are all within a 2 minute drive from the ballpark and have excellent food and alcohol selection, specifically Portos. Ale House also has a really nice deck with picnic tables and cornhole. A much more fratty/young crowd than I'd assume you're looking for though.

King Street isn't too far past that, and there's a lot of really good restuarants/shops/bars on it. Black Cat for burritos, Our Daily Bread and Wolfies have great sandwiches, Murphy's for drinks and cheese fries/wings/pizza, Capone's for pizza, Melanie's for breakfast, Galileo's for beer and brews, McAdoo's for for all of the above, and Boone Saloon for bar food. There's a Mellow Mushroom as well. Plenty of art galleries and outdoorsie stores, as well as App stores on King Street if you're into that sort of thing.

As BirdOfParadise said, check out Sunrise Grill. Best breakfast place in Boone for my money. Also, go to Coyote Kitchen and get a Boat, you won't regret it.

AMB is a great place to have a very good beer or three. But I wouldn't agree with the Lost Province recommendation. I was there a couple weekends ago and they had a very good kolsch up and the friends I was with liked the Grizz, not sure exactly the type, brown ale I think, but was a darker beer and was reminiscent of the Moose Drool one would get from a Big Sky Brewing in Montana.

The food at Lost Province was very good that night also.

Second that. Lost Province is a great addition to downtown. Give it a try.

Lost Province is a little pricey compared to other Boone locations and their acoustics make it hard to have a conversation, but it's solid food and the best wood-fire pizza in town IMO.

Also, pay careful attention to where you can and can not park in Boone.

I realize the target is college students, but I think downtown can support a few more dining options that aren't geared toward the students, similar to Lost Province.

I do wish AMB would move downtown. I saw the old Southern States building is now empty. Would make a good brewery.

Yes, pay attention to parking signs wherever you go. Parking is a premium, and the towing companies pockets have been full for decades.
