The addition of beach volleyball tells me that the NCAA isn't doing away with sports based on these criteria. I don't think skiing is going away anytime soon.

Well, you guys would be ok even if you were stuck in the MWC with UNM still because SLC is a Winter Olympics town. There will always be the facilities/support there IMHO.

I think our skiing program probably suffered a little when we decided to put a lot higher proportion of resources into FB. We certainly saw a drop-off in both skiing and gymnastics titles during that time. Obviously, the resurrection of the neglected FB program was worth it. Now the money is flowing back to the Olympic sports. I think we'll have added new facilities for each Olympic sport before we see stadium expansion depending on whether or not the new baseball field is done before the stadium.

That said, a lot of the sports mentioned are self-funding because they are sports that affluent people enjoy and donate specifically to maintain.

Here's the bottom line folks:

Stuff costs money. (Earth-shattering news I'm sure to some of you.)

State budgets, meaning university budgets, are tight. Should schools be cutting academics or athletics?

As I've said here before, the problem is caused by the NCAA. Schools want to play Level X basketball, but then they have to add a dozen or more pure red-ink sports to make some made-up mandatory minimum number of sport sponsorships.

I say ... why.

So what if a school plays four sports.

As long as they meet Title IX (<-- Federal law) why does it matter.

And as dollars for universities get tighter and tighter this should be looked at more and more closely. Never forget that the NCAA exists to protect the NCAA and it's members, which really aren't the schools, but their athletic departments. The NCAA makes "rules" to bloat those athletic departments, even to the detriment of the greater institution.

I have a question, where were your alpine skiers training? Were they heading up to Taos?

You'd have heard about him in Georgia. I believe he is in the top 10, but now beyond the top 2 or 3 there are so many, you don't remember them unless you really closely follow the sport.

Does 70-68 in the 5th set ring a bell?

Because then everybody would want to milk the NCAA basketball tournament and provide minimal sports.

OK.
And.
< shrug >

I'll play what you just said as, "Play basketball and have a non-subsidized, balanced budget athletic department with few sports, just those of interest to their fan demographics, that are self-sustaining fiscally."

"We" is Utah. I'm not sure where UNM did their alpine training.

So then put some friggin' tangible minimum requirements to be DI in basketball!

For example, this is not DI!:

What middle school game was being played there? Or is it elementary school? The local high school in my area seats almost 4,000, so I know that can't be a high school gym.

My goodness! That is a Division 1 school gymnasium? I hate using that word but "Arena" when used to describe that thing is pushing it.

There must be a typo in the link. "This intimate setting sits 1,012." It's 112 right??

RE: UNM drops skiing
Let's go to a fantasy world:

- to be DI, you only need to sponsor men's basketball plus three other men's team sports AND women's basketball plus four other women's team sports (no minimum requirement for individual sports)

What would then be a reasonable, tangible minimum requirement to be DI, based on a requirement for DI men's basketball?

I'd be tempted to say a 5k arena and averaging 1.25k per game (that's 25% capacity). Would that be too harsh, and how many DI low-majors would we lose??
Or should it be based on dollars (budget)?

Like bullet said, you don't want every single little college going DI under those smaller minimum sports sponsorship requirements.

But you don't want to be too harsh, because low-majors don't really hurt anything during the regular season and they add a bit of intrigue/drama to the first weekend of march madness. So you don't want to completely clean them out.

RE: UNM drops skiing
I had a similar thread thinking D 1 rules should change.
I would keep the minimum number of total scholarships.
Get rid of the number of sports having scholarships.
keep the minimum number of varsity team's.
Allow varsity non scholarship to count towards the total.
same number of athletes get scholarships.
Team sports like soccer,Lacrosse and hockey benefit.
Sports like golf and tennis become non scholarship for some schools.

A typical school might add soccer cut tennis and make golf non scholarship. Giving more opportunities to play for the school.
soccer 9.9 scholarships
Golf and tennis equal 8 I think combined.
Top ACHA programs could be allowed to compete against D1 teams growing the sport.

Maybe it sounds crazy but the Pioneer conference gets a playoff spot.
