It is closer for the Cajuns to go to Boone and Conway than it is to El Paso and Las Cruces.
There's nothing about those schools that are regional to the West except one is in Texas.
They need to go and talk with Craig Thompson.
I think a 6th G5 conference is needed at this point. The four Texas CUSA schools and Texas State could join New Mexico State in a new WAC. The WAC has Grandfather FBS status and could bring back FBS football. CUSA would drop to 10 schools, where they need to be and lose the long Texas trips. The Sun Belt would drop down to nine football schools and 11 all-sports schools, but they can find another school. Maybe Missouri State will finally show some leadership.
There are many hurdles that would have to be overcome, but I think this is a possible solution. This would definitely work for the Texas schools.
Just punt the WAC idea. There are several big problems. First is that even if the NCAA says the reinstatement is valid, the schools transitioning face big hurdles in meeting the schedule requirement. Second is there do not appear to be any significant number of FCS in the west wanting to transition and I don't see any real value for the rest of us for them to move. WAC is populated already with a group of schools that no one is wildly excited about affiliating with.
You have 62 FBS G5 schools who are in or clearly want to be in a conference.
MWC looks unlikely to expand past 12 so that leaves you with 50 across four conferences and two indies. That would make 5 ten team leagues but means dislodging schools that may not want dislodging.
History says things never go nice and neat. SEC thought they were going to add Texas, TAMU, Arkansas, and Florida State and ended up with Arkansas and South Carolina. Big 10 thought they were going to add Penn State and Notre Dame and ended up with Penn State and a long pause before taking Nebraska. Pac-10 thought they were going to add Colorado, Texas, TAMU, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State and ended up with Colorado and Utah. The folks at Utah State thought the WAC would hold firm, steal BYU from MWC and maybe force MWC to the table and then saw Nevada and Fresno jump and kill that idea.
I think it is just as likely that when realignment comes to G5 that some schools will lack a dance partner as it is that it can be done nice and neat.
The "nightmare" is for a group to break in the middle leaving a scattered mess on the edges much like what happened to the WAC turning their map into a doughnut with a big hole with no teams in the middle.
