Should an ECU go with established names like Romar, Crean, Thompson, etc, IF....
If the ECU job came open, would it be more advantageous to go with an established name over a lesser-known regional coach?

We've seen a lot of long-standing brand name coaches go back on the market this cycle... from John Thompson to Lorenzo Romar... meanwhile Jeff Lebo maintains a job in a much higher profile conference than he was hired for.

Is ECU the type of job that needs a name brand coach to right the ship? For scheduling and recruiting, would a Thompson get the ECU program well-stocked with good talent, better than a guy that's not so established. Is there any doubt he would schedule decent teams to play OOC with his contacts in the business?

I ask because of Compher's hiring history. At ECU and NIU he hired the 2 Montgomerys, Scottie and Mark, and so far neither of their records is very good.
As HC of NIU MBB, Mark Montgomery is 75–114 (.397) in 6 seasons.

Like USF, I'm not sure ECU can afford to follow up a Lebo with another Montgomery (i.e. an inexperienced guy). And, with the names on the market right now, there's an opportunity to bring in a steady hand for Pirate basketball, much like UCF has done with Johnny Dawkins. Some guys thrive with a new challenge. Look at what Rod Barnes has done at UC Bakersfield.

Yes, you have. It just seems like ECU needs some kind of rub... much like how SMU got a rub from hiring a basketball legend.

Would Gottfried bring enough cred? I would think at the very least he'd have enough friends in the business to put together an OOC schedule a couple hundred spots up in the rankings from where ECU was this year (300+). That's a good start.

I like Crean and can only wish that we would be a target of ours, but he can't win, even with a top 5 team in Greenville.

Crean or Thompson are not taking the ECU job.

You are right, because I am pretty sure that Jeff Lebo has the ECU job.

Why can't Tom Crean win in Greenville?

What qualities in a coach are essential to succeed at ECU?

IMHO, an experienced coach with a brand name would make that job easier. Lebo has come straight out and said he can't schedule. He blamed it on the coaches. ECU obviously needs someone who commands respect.

Given ECU's conference, a lot of options should be open for replacement.

SMU had a good blueprint. Get the right guy to create excitement at Minges and that place would light up like a Christmas tree. Recruiting would rise above SWAC-level. Donations would start to filter in.

ECU has never has this much to offer a coach.

RE: Should an ECU go with established names like Romar, Crean, Thompson, etc, IF....
SMU didn't have a blueprint, outside of the $40M we put into Moody Coliseum and some basic changes to funding and academic standards that were put into place over that last decade or two.

I can't emphasize this enough - SMU didn't want Larry Brown. When we fired Doh we did the usual rounds with the usual coaches, like Buzz Williams. We got turned down and were left with empty pockets.

Brown, for his part, wanted back into the NBA. When he got shut out he looked at colleges and tried to get Kentucky when Cal was hired and Villanova when Wright was hired. He got shut out there, too. So he looked further down the list and saw SMU.

We initially passed. Then his coaching tree, guys like Cal and Self lobbied for him. He got a interview, basically because 'Why not?,' and one of the boosters who sat in on the meeting came away saying it was the most impressive job interview he had ever seen.

But everyone was aware of Brown's penchant for leaving, not to mention his age, and we said fine, but he had to have a coach in waiting, and here comes Jank. Jank was offered $700,000/year to be an assistant under one of the all-time legendary coaches - talk about a sweet gig - and for his part was an up-coming-coach who brought with him a freshman point guard who had been the conference player of the year at Illinois State. Total win-win.

Brown for his part had never really left coaching and had been hanging around programs like Kentucky, Arizona, and Villanova, and so when he got the gig he had a ready-made list of transfers he had already been coaching on some level. We were nationally relevant in two years.

SMU got completely lucky, not that I'm complaining. All we did was 1) hire the best coach we could, who just happened to be a legend, and 2) had a contingency plan for when he abruptly left, which we all knew would happen. Yes there were other things we did that included funding and facilities, but I don't know if anyone could have drawn it up that way.

I think Thompson would do great here at ECU, and I think he would take the job if offered. He could bring in some solid recruits and also help with scheduling. I just hope that common sense will soon prevail in the AD office and just fire Lebo, he is the definition of just showing up for a paycheck, ECU can be a good basketball program if we would finally put some real effort into it.

ECU does not need a change at basketball coach, we need a change in some fans who are unrealistic in what they think is possible at the moment. In NC, ECU is known as a football school and not a basketball school so until that perception changes it'll be hard to keep local players home. Don't be fooled by anyone saying we haven't offered, we have. We were the first to offer Bowman who is at Boston College and he liked his visit, but his high school coach wanted him to go to a "basketball" school so he made phone calls for days and finally got Boston College to make an offer. Was that coach looking a job too? We'll never know but some in this thread tried to sell the idea that ECU never pushed the offer until Bowman and his family finally exposed it as a falsehood.

We have a number of ECU fans who were big Ruffin McNeil fans and they haven't gotten over his firing and now criticize everything and every coach at ECU along with the AD so please take with a grain of salt a number of these posts.

ECU has never been good in basketball, but we are better than ever and are getting better, and within a few years threads like this will be laughable if we stay with the current coaching staff.

1. Nic Moore was not the conference player of the year at Illinois State. He was not on the 1st, 2nd or HM teams. He was on the All-Freshman team, though he was not the Freshman of the Year either.

2. SMU didn't get lucky. Other than their rise to prominence under Larry Brown only excluded them from post-season play for 1 year. I suppose that is a small price to pay. Brown doesn't just leave, he cheats and runs.

3. Enjoy the forthcoming schedules at SMU. Jank has a history of putting together some of the worst non-con schedules in the country. IMO, Jank is out of his depth in coaching talent in the AAC, but we shall see. He did better last year than I would have guessed, so props to him for that.

Find someone that plays around the edges like SMU did recently. The penalties if you get caught won't outweigh the tremendous boost in prestige and program respect you will get as a result. All the great programs have done it in the past....Kentucky may be the worst offender and not coincidentally one of the most respected programs...

Find your program's Larry Brown, Sampson, Cal, or Bruce Pearl

im glad you posted this as our conference mates can see the loser mentality and idiotic reasoning most of our fans have.

-regarding bowman it has been posted a thousand times and people like you will not believe the facts. bowman was indeed offered first by ecu, but because he did not commit on the spot (very few do) he pulled his offer in favor of shawn williams. fast forward to february of bowmans senior year and ECU had not shown any interest in months towards bowman. on a wednesday last february BC, memphis, and cincy offer and 2 days later ECU is at havelock high to watch bowman play.

a similar situation happened with tyler maye from farmville. Maye was "too short" and we were full at guard, but recently Kansas state and nebraska offered and lebo suddenly feels that hes good enough to play for ecu.

Lebo needs to go

Hire the WKU basketball coach. And make sure you bolster the AD legal team.

How much longer does he get? He's been our coach for 8 years. We play in a conference with a 4 time national champion and lots of programs with deep history. We are an RPI killer for our conference mates. When the conference doesn't get multiple bids because of us being on the schedule that hurts our bottom line too. Again, how long is too long? We need results.
