FHOF Coach Huggins Coaching Tree?
How would you rank them?

#1 Frank Martin (South Carolina) great job at KSU with 4 NCAA in 5 years. Took 5 years but is in FF

#2 Mick Cronin (Cincinnati) we all know the details

# 3 Andy Kennedy (Ole Miss) at a non basketball school has produced the best basketball history

#4 Brad Underwood (Illinois) let's see how IL works out

# 5 Mike McGrath (University of Chicago)I guess they still have basketball. After being a Big10 Charter member and having the first Heisman winner they dropped football.

RE: FHOF Coach Huggins Coaching Tree?
What if Frank Martin doesn't make the tourney next year? Will his ranking go down?

Martin with a final 4 with with the Cocks and an elite 8 with k state has to get the nod. I would swap Underwood with AK though.

Underwood was hired by Huggs but only worked 1 year under him. He worked 6 years under Martin and even followed him to South Carolina. He's on Huggins "tree" but only because he worked under Martin.

It'll be interesting to see how Indiana and Illinois do with new coaches next year. Those two programs have the biggest basketball potential in the Big 10.

Completely untrue. Ole Miss has only been to the tourney twice in Kennedy's 11 seasons. His predecessor had a run of 5 tourney appearances in 6 years, including their only Sweet 16 in 2002.

Doss is right, Barnes went 3 times in 8 years. Kennedy has only been twice in 11, but unlike Barnes he has never had a losing season, and has won 20 games in all but a couple of seasons. He isn't lighting it on fire down there, but he is doing just well enough to keep the boosters and fans off his ass. He can have a nice long mediocre career there.

I honestly didn't care to look it up. They did, however, go to the tournament five out of six years. I guess it was a combination of Barnes and whoever preceded him. Regardless, it makes your claim about Kennedy false.

They went 3 years to "the tournament" not 5. The NIT is not "the tournament"! You said his predecessor (singular). So not only were you lazy, you were wrong.

They went in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2001, and 2002. I was a worthless literature major, but that sure does seem like 5 out of 6 years, regardless of it being under one coach or two. For a self-made gazillionaire, that shouldn't be remarkably challenging math for you.

The new Head Coach at Youngstown State, Jerrod Calhoun, is also part of the Huggins Coaching tree.

Calhoun just took Fairmont State to the D2 National Championship game, where they lost to NW Missouri State.

He also is a UC alum.

RE: FHOF Coach Huggins Coaching Tree?
Former Player (but not really a member of the coaching tree) Andre Tate has had a nice JUCO career:

Andre Tate has made Cincinnati State basketball synonymous with success during his tenure as head coach.

Tate has directed the Surge to a 206-113 record in his 10 seasons at the helm, entering the 2015-16 campaign. His teams have made three appearances in the NJCAA National Championships, with his 2010 squad posting a runner-up finish.

Tate began his Cincinnati State tenure in 2004-05 and immediately experienced success. His first Surge team posted an 18-14 ledger. Two seasons later Tate piloted Cincinnati State to a 25-5 record and its first trip to Nationals.

Tate took a one-year hiatus from Cincinnati State to serve on the staff at the University of Cincinnati. He returned in 2008-09 and a year later led the Surge to a 27-9 campaign and a second place finish at the Nationals.

The 2013-14 Surge tied a school record for wins while compiling a 29-5 record. Cincinnati State shared the OCCAC regular season championship with Owens, then beat the Express in the district championship game to advance to the NJCAA National Championships.

The 2014-15 team posted a 25-7 record, the fifth time in the past six seasons that the team has exceeded the 20-win mark.

Tate has had similar success developing talent. Thirteen Surge have been selected to the All-OCCAC first team, including John Williamson, Rayshawn Goins, James Millen and Winston Grays. Tate has earned OCCAC Coach of the Year honors twice (2009, 2014).

Tate was raised in Chicago and played basketball for Kankakee Community College following his graduation from Paul Roberson High School. Tate joined the University of Cincinnati program his junior season. When legendary Bob Huggins became head coach a year later, Tate was moved to point guard and played a major role in the team’s 20-14 season. He averaged 17.1 points and 3.4 assists as a senior, earning second team All-Metro Conference honors.

He played professional basketball in Puerto Rico, Finland and Turkey, between stints as a legal aid and social services counselor. In 2000, Tate launched his coaching career in the Chicago Public Schools system, serving one-year terms as assistant coach at Englewood and Lincoln Park high schools before becoming head coach at Wendell Phillips High.

In 2003, Tate returned to Cincinnati to serve as a teacher and athletic director at Douglass Middle School in the Cincinnati Public Schools system, and to join the Cincinnati State staff as assistant coach.

It's disappointing this school hasn't been a consistent feeder of top juco talent to UC over the last decade.

Frank Martin inherited a KSU roster that included

5 Star - Bill Walker
#1 High School recruit in the country Michael Beasley
highly ranked guard Jacob Pullen
Highly ranked guard Denis Clemente

It would be difficult to miss the NCAA tournament with that roster. Those were his three best years. He went on a downward slope once those players exited, which is why he was fired at KSU

What he has done at South Carolina this year is very impressive. But to crown him the best of Huggins assistants is radically premature.

But it does prove my point that all that really "counts" or anyone remembers is final four or better NCAA finishes.

Martin left KSU due to disagreements with the AD. The fans never wanted him gone. He still made the tournament 4 of 5 years and an elite 8 without Walker and Beasley. Clemente was his recruit. When we recruited Downey, it was basically down to Clemente and Downey, when DD commited, Clemente went to Miami instead.
