RE: Mama Lawson speaks
I'm 52 years old and my dad provides the best guidance and advice a person could ask for. To this day, he's a dad first and best friend a close second. Sometimes he says "you want my dad hat on or my friend hat on, son?"
I've used that phrase 100 times with both my kids.

Spoke briefly with Dedric Lawson's mother, Dedra, on Saturday. Said no decision has been made yet on whether Dedric Lawson is turning pro.

Dedra Lawson also said that Dedric Lawson won't declare for draft w/o agent. Either he'll be back at Memphis or sign w/ agent. No in between
I love it when parents speak for their adult children.
The kid is 19yo. Why is it wrong for a parent to speak on his behalf?
You've got to be kidding. Thinking of going to the NBA and mama is doing the talking for him?
She didn't hold a press conference on her son's behalf. She was likely asked a question by the reporter and she answered it. If my son were 19 and in a similar situation, you can bet we'd be there to provide guidance and direction.

RE: Mama Lawson speaks
I'm talking about the fact it was his mama.
There is a certain decorum that moms, imo, should follow, if they don't wanna demean their sons' strength.
Moms are notorious for doing that...It's almost a genetic thing. lol
You should see the sons who get homeschooled by their moms.

Agree, no problem with mom guiding/advising her son, but Dedra's best course is to not comment until they make a decision, IMO.
Also, Dedra is not known as being a wallflower. I was AAU events with my son a couple of summers ago, and when her sons team played, she was usually the loudest person in the gym.
With grandpa and uncle on radio and social media, there is a perception that the Lawson adults might be enjoying the kids fame a little too much. With her husband on staff, and two sons on team, next time we hear from mom should be to say either he's gone or he's back.

Personally, I think both Lawson's are good parents and both are good people. The kids are all high character young men, IMO. All the yes sir/no sir type.

Think the cutoff date for underclassmen to declare for draft in April 23rd.
If Dedric is declaring, which I think he will, good for Tubby to know as early as possible.
For JUCOs and grad transfers, potential playing time usually trumps all other factors, so for recruiting purposes better to know now.

Grad transfers are also influenced by a school's prospects of earning a bid to the NCAA Tourney and our prospects are low.

How so?
Tubby is chasing guys right now who are the 7th man on their JUCO team. It's not like some 5* PF is wondering whether to commit to Memphis but is afraid of coming off the bench behind Dedric.

Saluki is a great poster here. Knowledgable and smart. Probably a good guy. Likely, not probably, I should say.
I'm just surprised at his extreme negativity, which isn't like him, certainly, about Tubby Smith. At least this early in the game.

Dedric needs to get stronger, work on his explosiveness, and quickness. I know that improvements in quickness are limited, but he needs to work to absolutely maximize his. Regarding explosiveness, back in the day, I improved my vertical 6" in 1-2 months on The Leaper. I am not sure what Dedric's hurry is. He does not have Million$ awaiting him, he is young (came out of HS a year early), his body is still maturing, and his family is financially stable (from what I can tell). What is the rush?
---
Of course, my thoughts mean NOTHING!
Dedric is not really that young for his class. He'll be 20 on Oct. 1st, turned 18 on October 1st of his Freshman year. My guess is 75% of the 1st round picks in the draft this year will be younger than Dedric.
For those who had kids play club sports, September/October birthdays were always the tweener ages. Kid was either "old" for one classification or "young" for the other.
Dedric is about as young as you can get as a sophomore. If you're talking about this draft...Last year 11 first rounders were younger than Dedric will be this year, and 4 second rounders. That's 25% of all picks.
Dedric lacks the athleticism to be a lock. But he is definitely still one of the young prospects.

I don't understand your point. You say "If you're talking about this draft . . . Last year . . ." Makes no sense.
Only makes sense to compare Dedric's age to other players in his grade. In last year's draft, for instance, Dragan Bender and Marquese Chriss, who went 4 & 8, are both younger than Dedric. Georges Papagianis (13) and Furkan Korkmaz (26) are also younger.
Point is he's not that young for his class. People act like he's a full year younger than other Sophomores, which is not true. Basically, he was 19 almost all of his Sophomore year, which is the normal age for that grade.

RE: Mama Lawson speaks
The problem with the "not ready yet" argument is that it assumes he gets better and more attractive for NBA scouts. NBA likes very young; first non-Freshman on the Draft Express Top 100 right now is Justin Jackson at #13. 17 of the top 20 are Freshman or Int'l players.
DraftExpress has him 89th right now on the Top 100 Prospects:
DEDRIC LAWSON SF
MEMPHIS SOPHOMORE AGE: 19.5 HEIGHT: 6'8.0" WINGSPAN: 7'2.5" WEIGHT: 225 19.2 POINTS 9.9 REBOUNDS 3.3 ASSISTS 27.8 PER
He has some things the NBA likes. Didn't he have the biggest hands at the combine last year? And rebounding is one of the stats that traditionally transfers well. Analytics guys will like the PER.
I think he goes and doesn't get drafted. Signs for the summer league, where his performance determines whether he gets a D-League spot next fall.
