RE: Expansion on the mind of the AAC!!!
They were talking about this Wichita State things on my local sports station weeks ago (VCU's flagship station). They were saying the AAC asked Wichita State, VCU, and Dayton. Wichita State was receptive, but the other two told them to take a hike.

Must have been a basketball only invite. No way the flyers turn down an AAC full invite.

You have to play basketball in your main conference.

The AAC invite to Wichita may have been a full invite.

If they get an invite, it will be for everything but football.

Why leave the A-10 to join a football first conference that is massively spread out? Dayton has no trouble earning at large bids. For VCU, its kind of he same dynamic. They could accept, but seems like they'd be setting themselves up for more instability for marginal benefit.

Remember, when the AAC needs to make a football move....they will make it, even if it craters the basketball product.

I think the AAC is looking basketball specifically with their next move. Makes sense as the more automatic bids equates to more money. They are pretty much where they need to be and maxed out with football.

RE: Expansion on the mind of the AAC!!!
I think I'd be ok with a 14/10 or even a 16/10 makeup if it meant better basketball. We are already a strong softball and baseball conference, I think time together will make us a better football conference. But our basketball the last bunch of years has been not so good, as a conference.

The real question is what southeastern schools that don't play football would really increase or basketball....FGCU, Belmont, UNCW, UNO, T A&M CC.

Adding more 'no football' schools would increase instability. Remember that UTA and UALR are probably trapped. They literally have no better options. So they don't rock the boat.

What the Belt needs is for the teams currently in the conference to stop scheduling hot garbage OOC and to hold crummy coaches accountable. And that starts with USA, unfortunately.

What do you mean when you say instability? I don't think we are in any danger of losing enough basketball programs to leave us scrambling to pick up whatever warm bodies we can.

I very much like the Florida Gulf Coast idea. Belmont might work if the conference members don't have a problem with private schools. I doubt we can poach any basketball programs from the CAA.

The main issue with another full conference member is it again throws travel partnerships out of whack.

RE: Expansion on the mind of the AAC!!!
Actually, our basketball has not been "not so good" over the last 2 years. This year, the conference finished with an RPI of 13, which was ahead of CUSA (23) and the MAC (14). Last year, the conference finished with an RPI of 17 which was still ahead if CUSA (21). The great thing is, the SBC is trending upwards with great coaching hires and an influx of better players. The league will only get stronger and better. We are in a great position.

Yea and that's even with USA tolerating an underperforming coach who has cratered our program. He was just extended for yet another year. This will be a rebuilding year (he doesn't seem to recruit well either) so we're looking at 9 or so D1 wins next year. Then, and only then, will we bring a new coach in. Then....if we hire correctly...maybe, just maybe, we will not suck in about 2 or 3 years from then.

Thanks for holding up the conference for us guys. Don't expect us back for a few years though.

If you can grab FGCU, a CofC or UNCW would jump ship as well. Personally I would go with UNCW.

I think Matt Graves recruits decently actually. He just isn't developing the team for whatever reason. We have and have had talent. He just hasn't figured out what to do with it.

RE: Expansion on the mind of the AAC!!!
I had a lot of hope for Graves. He came from a mid major program that had reached the championship game. Hoped he could bring some sort of success back to the program. I was even excited about the "Graves Yard" for teams beat. But the excitement of the program is about zero. Unfortunately we have the same situation going on in football too.

Time to see some victories and competing for the conference title in both sports, or its time to make a change.
