For the first time in approximately forever, Rice does not look like the prohibitive favorite in Conference USA as league play begins this weekend. That’s not to write off the perennial powerhouse Owls after their 6-13 start — no C-USA rival would be so foolhardy. But the combination of Rice’s early struggles and the robust starts of Southern Miss and Louisiana Tech — two confident veteran teams coming off regional appearances a year ago — adds up to a new dynamic in C-USA. Throw in the strong starts by Florida Atlantic, Charlotte, Florida International and Old Dominion, and this conference looks like it could be a free-for-all.

But right now, La Tech and Southern Miss look like the teams to beat heading into C-USA play. The Bulldogs are 15-2, with quality wins over Arkansas, Mississippi State and UL Lafayette. The Golden Eagles are 13-4, albeit against a slightly softer schedule. Both teams have played well in all three phases of the game, and the series between the two teams in Ruston, La., this weekend should be revealing.

“It is a big series. Tech’s playing as good as anybody in our league, and right there at the top with everybody in the country, really,” Southern Miss coach Scott Berry said. “They’ve been very impressive in all phases of their game. I watched them (Wednesday) night against Lafayette on their webcast. Those guys really compete, get after it. It’s a big one right off the bat.”

So Braley has a hairline fracture in his ring finger. Not good.

That guy just can't catch a break. Injuries two years in a row.

I mean, it doesn't sound nearly as serious as what he had last year but yeah it definitely sucks. Hate it for him since he's a such a competitor.

I'll be coming to tomorrow's game with a group. We have a few players from the general area, so I'm sure their parents and friends will be there.

2-2 Heading to Top 4.

Something i have always wondered about techs park. How many people have been driving down that street minding their own bidness and had to replace a windshield?

If I were going to pick a game for us to take, it would have been this one.

Outstanding pitching tonight given the opponent and ballpark. McCarty was absolutely dominant his last 10 batters.

Gotta love Wallner. Just your typical 6'6 freshman centerfielder who comes onto the mound to retire 9/10 batters on Friday night in his third career appearance.

These next two games should highlight Tech's deep pitching staff. Harris, Linck, Sutton, and Harrison are all very solid regulars. Sullivan may be back as well from his minor injury.

Well, I was hoping we could take at least one game on the road. We did that, now for just one more....

Yeah. Advantage is definitely to Tech in that area given that our #2 and 3 starters are unproven. Last night was a game we probably had to have.

Good news for us is that we picked up a win without using Sandlin.

By the way, I thought Linck was starting today. Interesting to see him in relief.

I heard that too but La Tech stat tracker has Harrison as the only Tech pitcher through 3 innings. 03-confused

Thanks. The person doing stat tracker must've missed it.

Sullivan threw 69 pitches Wednesday vs ULL so I'd imagine he's good for 50-70 pitches today.
