GCU / Mejerle Rumors
So, whats this I'm hearing on Twitter (Paola Boivin) involving Mejerle and Illinois?

"A lot of chatter happening about Illinois' interest in GCU basketball coach Dan Mejerle."

RE: GCU / Mejerle Rumors
I'd call it lazy journalism. I think a Chicago Tribune sports writer wrote a column of candidates. Illinois alum Jerry Colangelo is consulting on those candidates, so Majerle was thrown into the group. Nothing substantive actually connecting Majerle to the job. Just speculation based on relationship between Colangelo & Majerle.

As much as some of you would like to see Thunder Tan go, you're stuck with him at least until GCU wins the WACt & goes dancing.

The Allure of a Big Ten job plus dollars is great. Combine that with being Colangelo's Alma Mater, and his desire to see Illinois return to prominence, it can be a tough sell.

Regardless of what we think, a team from the WAC or Big Sky is never winning a national championship. Illinois is talent rich, and has won championships, and has been in the title game this century.

Not saying he would take it, with his business interests here, but Illinois is a much higher level job.

Sounds like your trying to comfort yourself rather than convince us you have facts. If you think Dan would turn down coaching Illinois to stay at GCU I think your getting brain freeze from some super ice cold purple koolaid![/b]

RE: GCU / Mejerle Rumors
Dancing, if Majerle voluntarily leaves GCU for Illinois or any other college coaching job (his name is also being floated in conversations about UW job) before leading GCU to the NCAA tournament, I'll pay for your hotel room at WACt in the following season. I'm not joking, so please hold me to it if he does. The bummer for you is that it's not happening.

RE: GCU / Mejerle Rumors
Majerle wouldn't turn down Illinois, but Illinois is never going to offer him the job. The connection is Colangelo so journalists run with it.

If Illini can't hit on their home run candidates, they'll go for Keatts. If NC State grabs Keatts, Illini will turn to Musselman in the West before Majerle.

RE: GCU / Mejerle Rumors
Does anyone know how much Dan is making at GCU and what does Illinois pay the head coach? I'm sure there is not much difference. Even if they were interested I don't think he would take that job. Dan played in PHX and has been in PHX many years so that's his home. He probably has an excellent salary, good facilities, great backing and already lives where he wants to be. The only way I see him leaving is he gets into the NCAA tournament and a PAC12 school comes calling. I just don't see him relocating himself or family to BIG10 country.

If Illinois offers, he is gone. Illinois will be able to pay $3-4 million, and he'll be able to recruit 4 and 5 stars.

The last great Illinois head coach was hired out of New Mexico State. The next great Illinois head coach could be hired out of Grand Canyon.

I really doubt that. This past coach was making 1.6 million and that was after a raise. Dan is rumored to be making 1.5 million. 100k is not getting him. He is not leaving his home for that.

Certainly not with GCU being finally eligible for the NCAAs next year. If he makes a Sweet 16 run? Then pack his bags. But he's safe right now

Ridiculous rumor. Majerle has restaurants and family in Phoenix. He is getting paid well to coach at GCU and has talked in the past about his goals being to lead GCU to an NCAA tournament. He is not leaving for Illinois. He is not leaving for a state that is in the middle of a two year state budget crisis. There will be much better opportunities for Majerle in the future if he wants them.

RE: GCU / Mejerle Rumors
DM has a son who is just starting hs in the fall. He is not leaving the state. He was not going to take any other coaching job after leaving the suns if GCU did not come calling. He doesn't need the money. GCU pays well, they provide great facilities. He has his restaurants. He is already a hometown hero. He takes GCU to the tourney, he becomes a legend in the valley. He loves AZ and the weather. How else would he work on his tan? At best, he could use this as leverage to get more from GCU.

If Illinois offers, he is gone. But lucky for GCU, he hasn't done enough to be on Lou Henson's level, so I doubt they even consider him.

So young and ignorant you are Lopesup. I guess we will see. You know Majerle is from the Midwest, right? If Illinois offers him or any other school a giant money package, Majerle will resemble the roadrunner you see in cartoons when he takes off running and GCU fans will be standing there wondering what the hell happened. It also amazes me that you think GCU will match any other schools offer to keep Majerle. I guess you may have a point since GCU is all about the money.

the state of Illinois has a budget crisis. U of Illinois is rolling in the cash...

Illinois can spend up to $5/million a year to get the coach they want...

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/col...olumn.html
The reality is a program with tradition that just invested $170 million to renovate its home arena and signed a top-10 national recruiting class will intrigue the most comfortable of college coaches. Whitman left no doubt he can offer a competitive compensation package — and the six-year, $21 million contract he gave football coach Lovie Smith made the promise believable. One source familiar with the Illinois board of trustees discussions said Whitman could have as much as $25 million to spend.

Frank. Lopes fans think Majerle is getting paid what the coaches at Duke and Kentucky are getting paid so that Majerle will never leave. Reality is Majerle is probably not being considered since he really hasn't proven himself yet, at least at the level of getting a huge offer from one of the P5 schools. I know he has done decent in the WAC but that's really not saying much. I would sure like to know if Majerle is making a ridiculous salary or a lot less than everyone thinks. Why? Because I'm nosy. Now that GCU is eligible we will find out how big time Majerle really is or if he's just that stupid guy shirtless painted purple riding onto a basketball court on a Harley. Yeah, that really happened.01-wingedeagle
