From what I can tell from Twitter and others comments, the only reason given is because participation is against the bylaws. Someone tweeted that the appeals committee went into "executive session" for the decision/vote, so nothing was said in public. I think another reason why people are upset is that there was no explanation and/or pretense at consideration of the appeal.

It is a stupid rule they have had for many years, the girls team that won state was also 'screwed over' .

They have a stupid rule, they stuck with their stupid rule. It really is pretty simple.

Remember, that Calkins is a condescending, negative writer. Not surprising.

Why would that shock you? He plays the race card at every opportunity.

While sending his own kids to a private school out east.

You're right and I agree. I was shocked because this decision had nothing to do with race.

All kidding aside, it's hard for Memphis teams to win close games up there. Particularly in Divison 2. Need to be up double digits.

Yeah, but that doesn't fit in with Calkins' narrative.

I think racist is a bit much - and for a public figure like Calkins, it's way too much - but there is serious disdain in Middle/East Tennessee for Memphis/West Tennessee and the demographics don't lie.

Regardless, we here have to keep our heads up and not stoop to their game and play the race card - it's what they expect of us.

First off people are saying they will NEVER have the opportunity to go to NYC. Yeah as a kid it is a big deal...But NEVER...You can get to NYC in a car.

If you cant afford to stay in the city stay in NJ and take the train over. So yeah I feel that most who want to go to NYC eventually will at some time in their life.

It's more about the educational experience of going to NYC.

Chance of a lifetime for some of those kids.

I agree. Most of those kids will never get the opportunity to visit the Big Apple.
You guys act like nyc is paris or hawaii.
05-nono Some and probably most of those kids have probably never been out of Memphis. NYC is an experience that they would never forget. l remember being overjoyed to go to Nashville for our state track championship, staying at a motel for the first time, swimming in the motel pool, etc. etc. I also remember my first trip to NYC as an adult and it was inspiring just to be on 5th Ave, seeing the skyscrapers, Radio City Music Hall, etc. etc.
Yes the TSSAA has cheated these kids out of something they worked hard for and deserved. If I were rich I think I would send them all for a long week-end just so they could have the experience of NYC even without the basketball experience.

Again the key word people are using is NEVER...These kids will NEVER have a chance to go to NYC...I say that is a silly statement.

It's not a silly statement. Through my work, I have met people from organizations around the city including Boys and Girls Club, Memphis Business Academy, Memphis Athletic Ministries, etc. Please believe me when I tell you that some of the kids served by these organizations have never even seen the Mississippi River, been to Germantown or even outside of their neighborhoods. One person that I work with said they met a kid who had never seen/eaten sushi before. Those are things we take for granted. And although we may think it sounds silly that a kid born and raised here has never seen the Mississippi River, it's actually true. So you can imagine that going to NYC is certainly not in the cards for a lot of people in this city. It is a great privilege that a lot of us take for granted because we have the means to travel, both through work and personally. It's not like that for everyone. Heck, if you haven't seen it yet, watch the documentary Undefeated. It'll give you a small glimpse into the life of an underprivileged kid growing up in North Memphis. Then tell me if you think all those kids can get to NYC if they really wanted to.

Some people may not have the desire to travel, but most have the opportunity.

Ya, there is nothing to see in NYC...

The case could easily be made that NYC is more iconic than either Hawaii or Paris. I don't know why the TSSAA denied the request to participate, but I do agree with others that it would have been the chance of a lifetime for at least some of those kids.

I made that statement from a cost perspective...You can drive to NYC the others you have to spend a good amount on a plane ticket.

That follows many into adulthood. There are a lot of adults in North and South Memphis who have never been to NYC and will never be able to go, not because they don't want to.

RE: TSSAA screwed over East
The reason why has been repeated, it's against the rules. Silly rule? Maybe.

The rule is in place to keep coaches from gaming the system and keeping their team together for "tournaments" during the offseason and getting an advantage over other schools. It's also intended to give students a break from activities occasionally to focus on other things. (Really a joke in this day and age, due to AAU, but it is a purpose.)

Sure, exceptions could be made. I would be interested to see if anyone has any examples of the TSSAA applying the exception to any other school in the past. The TSSAA definitely makes money grabs, but I'm not sure this is one. Racial? Doubt it - though the Memphis political reputation in Nashville is not good, by any means. That has more to do with incompetent Memphis representation over the years, and less to do with race.

Sadly, most of them won't. If your argument is 1 or 2 may get to go at some point in their lives, ok. Maybe.

Odds are, unless their playin bb at a high level, or wind up getting a college degree, they'll not get to go. This IS most of those kids, I'd bet.
