[NIT] Akron to take on Houston at TSU
(03-15-2017 09:26 PM)CornellCoog Wrote:  That was actually a pretty good game by the Coogs. We shot a higher percentage from the floor, the 3, and the FT line. We matched them in rebounds (which is amazing for us) and had more assists and blocks.

We lost this game because Akron took 30 FT attempts. Their big man had 13 attempts. Our entire team had 17. And, before anyone says it's because we jack up the THREE a lot, Akron took 7 more triples than we did.

The refs weren't horrible but that's where the game was lost.

My only complaint is we didn't seem too fired up to be playing. Very little energy.

You all also missed easy layups in the last 5 minutes.

And that last part is solely on the coach. Just one more example why Sampson is not who we thought he was.

Sampson, just like Penders, is making chicken salad out of chicken ****. He doesn't have much to work with in the way of fan support or resources yet produces upper echelon teams in his conference. That alone shows you the job he's doing. This team had no low post presence and basically had 4 D-I players. It's a surprise he won as much as he did.

I was at the game, the fan support is coming around.

The energy Sampson brings to this program probably the best I've seen in quite a while, the new arena should definitely provide Sampson the much needed boost he lacks to attract better talent here.

I don't care who the opponent was that we lost to, Houston took a good step forward in terms of basketball interest around here.

The Akron Center was amazing he looked like a football player, he'll be drafted. The kid could shoot free throws also.

Akron was a good team and a tough match up for us. Anyone who knows basketball knew that coming into the game. Hopefully we can add some young bigs in the offseason. Good season all and all.

FWIW..... The Akron center is from Cincy and was not recruited by Mick. Football in high school, grandpa played for Browns and Bengals.

The center was good. I think the refs bailed him out on some calls. If he trims up he could be a beast in the paint.

I agree

He committed way to many fouls that were ignored, if they called them their offensive lineman/center would've been fouled out in the 3rd quarter.

But hey it is what it is they won we lost, we'll be better situated next season.

If Sampson can find a couple of big men with just average offensive skills (ie-average quality centers for the AAC), we'll be dancing next year. Even one average quality AAC center might be enough with a healthy Davis.

With the new basketball arena already in motion I'm confident we'll land some top notch talent. No more excuses not to land them, IMHO.

Big Dog was being recruited by Xavier until he had a leg injury in high school which led to him putting on more weight. I'm not as optimistic as some of you that he'll have an NBA career, but he is certainly good enough to make a lot of money playing in a quality overseas league.
