That's tough to speculate, but you could be right. I could see Thompson leaving if Murphy is fired. Epps might decommit as well. Other than that, I think Bond is kind of handcuffed here, unless he wants to go elsewhere to sit out a year just to play one final season. Plus, he's going to be "the guy" next season no matter who comes here.

Nobles is someone that I really want to stay, because I think he could be a very good player under the right system. He's the best three point shooter on this team, but doesn't get enough looks. Anyway, he's already used his redshirt, so he's essentially in the same boat as Bond, unless they both graduate early.

Jackson, Minnie, Harris, and Groce are all basically locked in. They won't sit out ANOTHER year to go elsewhere. Maybe one (or two) of Steele, LWH, and Madray leave, but I doubt Steele is one of them. Silver signed his LOI, so he's in too.

Thompson would be quite the loss, but we should still have some talent for a new coach to play with, and that's without said coach bringing in some of his own guys late in the game.

Yep, losing Thompson and Epps would be very bad.

I still believe Thompson is more important than we think. He can control a game. Next year we won't have Lee or Mangum.

Who would control the game? No one? We'd have talent but not the real 20 point guy or 15 rebs.

BTW, I hate this talk because, the pressure could be on Ty tomorrow, he would be the hangman if he misses free throws....

But after 6 years, can we expect adjustments? He kind of is what he is at this point. We'll never be an embarrassment in the conference with Murphy at the helm, but I don't think we will be title contenders either.

I've seen other coaches get fired in the MAC for similar, and even with better resumes. Reggie Witherspoon did a solid job at Buffalo, but never got them over the hump. Billy Taylor had basically the same resume as Murphy at Ball State. Both were fired.

I think it's a bit of a gamble, and Lyke could screw this all up by making the wrong hire. We could look back on Murphy's time and miss it dearly if the next coach doesn't improve us. But that is the risk you have to take if you want to challenge the Akron's and the Ohio's of the world for MAC supremacy. I don't think it's unrealistic, either.

Honestly if Murphy was let go i would like to see mike brown get a shot as head coach for next year ie interim and if he does well be considered for a permanent job we would still interview potential candidates beginning late this fall

Trust me, it would not be a good thing to lose Thompson. He solves a lot of problems that plagued us for years, especially the low post scoring. There would be a lot of pressure on Minnie to fill that void, and we don't know how he will adjust to MAC play yet.

Epps is more of an unknown as an incoming freshman, but he appears to be very talented. Let's hope we hold onto him regardless.

RE: Game Day: NIU (MAC Tourney)
I really, really hope Murphy gets another year.

I really want to see a good PF (Minnie), JT4 (center), Bond (or others SF), a true PG, Jackson.

That lineup seems more position-correct than what we are seeing this year.

If JT4 would leave, Steele would need to start and his back up would be? Would be? Would be?? Would be? (this is a recording). (hint: I'm not sure Madray is a '5'. I still think he is playing out of position).

P.S. to my friends: I don't really care if Bond plays SF or PG or both in the same game...

My instinct tells me Murphy gets another year but another subpar conference and no major steps forward ie Mac title over 20 wins or nonpaying post season think nit then a change will be made after next season

Sam,

As always, impressive logic in your posts above. Very interesting take that this might be an "opportune" time to replace Murphy given the particular player retention scenarios. You also seem to acknowledge it is not going to happen, particularly with another first round win.

I'll agree on all points. I would just add that he deserves another year. Nothing is expected to change of course, but I think the man has earned the opportunity to prove otherwise. Next year will definitely be Murphy's last if he can not improve. Hopefully you will be able to share with us another positive player retention scenario then.

Wooden, You and I were leading the calls for Murphy's replacement. I think we both changed our tune? But I agree with your points. In addition to more flexibility with in-game adjustments, he could tweek some of his overall system too (particularly offensively)

I appreciate it. I'll always support this team and hope Murphy is the guy to get us back into the Big Dance. It's just that my expectations (and patience) are dwindling.

We may differ on if he should be back or not, but I won't be furious if he's retained. We have a very intriguing team coming in next season. Who knows? Maybe Paul Jackson is the floor general we need, and maybe Elijah Minnie has star potential. It'll be interesting to see how the offense operates without Willie Mangum and Raven Lee. Do we become more efficient? Do we revert to the Lampley days? It's a complete unknown. Should be a very athletic, exciting team at times though.

I think if he beats Akron, he stays. Honestly, I think he stays regardless now that we didn't lose to NIU. I just think Frank is right: I will have minimal expectations next year if Murphy is still at the helm, even though we should be one of the more talented teams in the conference again.

Glad we could help. 03-drunk

I think NIU has hit their ceiling also with our current coach. We lose players every year, usually 1-2 of the more talented players. Maybe we can swap coaches.

Nah. I think we'd both be better off moving on. We'll see if our AD's pull the trigger or not.

You know any coaches we can look at, for whom offense isn't a complete mystery? We've tried the "hard-nosed defense" mantra, blah blah blah, for 6 years now. Still hard to win when you can't score points. Maybe our BB coach needs an offensive coordinator lol.
