It should be the best basketball job for a coach in that conference. Excellent fan support and attendance. Boosters and fans prioritize hoops over football, so it's more attractive to a basketball coach than a place where football is king and basketball is an afterthought. On the other hand they don't have any super-wealthy boosters AFAIK, so if a coach's asking price is north of $2 million/year (e.g., Crean) then that coach won't be on their short list.

UNM did pony up for Steve Alford. Iowa fans were happy to be rid of Alford as he had a long term contract that paid him over 2 mil a year there. He obviously took an intial pay cut from Iowa to New Mexico but the fact that NM got Alford and also fired Neal with 3 years left on his contract says something about the money they have. They love their hoops in Lobo Land. Why doesn't the Pit get the NCAA tourney games anymore? That was a fun place to watch the tourney! I watched Bobby Knight and Rick Pitino coach teams in the tourney there in the 90's...

It's not a done deal yet, but New Mexico may be the second D-I team this spring to fill its head coaching job with an NBA assistant coach. UNM is reportedly negotiating to hire San Antonio Spurs assistant coach James Borrego.

Multiple sources tells KRQE Sports that James Borrego is negotiating to become new men's basketball coach at New Mexico.

Oral Roberts fired their coach since the 90's Scott Sutton...on April 10 (wtf?). He turned down a lot of offers over the years.

Sutton had ORU as one of the better midmajors in the mid-2000's. They walked into Allen Fieldhouse and knocked off a top 3 Kansas team.

edit: Gottlieb tweeted Sutton found out on twitter and ORU met with players without telling him. Gottlieb also says new president implemented recruiting restrictions recently that made ORU non-competitive. Someone mentioned tattoos he didn't like were one. Former players also pissed on twitter.

Article from a local sportswriter said that Scott Sutton could have stayed if he had fired his brother Sean, whom Scott hired as an assistant after Oklahoma State fired Sean.

Also, New Mexico is apparently now focusing its search on the New Mexico State head coach, Paul Weir.

Both are done deals

Yeah, reading this about the new wacko president and his interference it's no wonder ORU went from midmajor power to 8-22 under Sutton. Attendance cut by 60% in that span.

One last 05-bump for this thread.

Looks like the only D-I men's basketball programs that still have a head coaching vacancy are Florida A&M, Grambling, Oral Roberts, and Presbyterian.
