RE: Football Facilities!!!!!
Here is what was done with the L.A. Coliseum, which is a very old stadium built almost 100 years ago and used for the 1932 Olympics (which obviously means it had a track around what later became a football field).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Los_Angele...aerial.jpg

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USC_Trojan...USC-UO.jpg

They moved the field toward one end and added seats to field level. They also put in end zone seating and blocked off a lot of seating which would be obstructed by the new end zone seating. That appears to be tarp. We know how to use tarp to block off seating. :)

RE: Football Facilities!!!!!
I think the simplest solution is to slide the field to the South. Maybe they could even lower it if possible. This will also mean that the Press Box needs to be extended or rebuilt.

It would be nice to see the grassy knoll at the south end of the field get used for something. Think Pine Knob.

RE: Football Facilities!!!!!
I was listening to Heather's interview with Chad.

While we wonder about the new athletic building and the field and suites, and, and, and...

I think a key part and I hope I got this right: Will EMU athletics vacate Bowen? Will the Olympic sports coaches there, etc. move to West campus? Will the BOR say, "okay, we have de facto increased (main campus) office space (by picking up space in Bowen?)"

If I'm right on this, it is more than simply an expansion of athletic facilities on West campus. It has ramifications for non-athletics.

I'm fuzzy on this, but I'm sure others know: When Prey-Harrold was remodeled, weren't offices moved to Bowen (space made available there)?

If I'm right on all of this, this building project is multi-faceted. I remember when Akron built their FB stadium they made provisions I believe for residences, etc. attached to the project.

Curious to hear a lot more next month when the BOR acts on the proposal.

RE: Football Facilities!!!!!
The EMU Student Government issued a statement on this story. I am pasting it below:

To EMU students, faculty, staff, and those it may concern:

Student Government learned from The Detroit Free Press about the $35 million proposal to renovate and relocate several of Eastern Michigan University’s athletic facilities. Eastern’s Student Government was mentioned in that article. As background, our Student Body Senate passed a resolution (S.Res. 103-18) several weeks ago in support of a minimal student opt-out fee to generate funds to renovate the University’s Rec/IM facilities in partnership with the University and outside donors. The Rec/IM facilities are used by students, student clubs, employees, alumni, and the community for a wide variety of recreational and educational purposes. We must, however, make clear that Student Government did not intend to, nor do we, support using any University funds for a multi-million dollar renovation of our athletic facilities outside of the plans to renovate the Rec/IM. To be clear, any renovations or additions to any of the University’s athletics facilities as part of this $35 million plan, aside from the Rec/IM, must be completely funded by outside donors.

We strongly support the strides our student athletes have made in our history as a University. Many of our collegiate teams, such as track and field, swimming, and gymnastics are the best in the MAC. We are proud to support these programs and confident that the significant investments contemplated in the Regents’ plan can be funded with the support of generous donors. However, Student Government WILL NOT support any renovations to the athletic facilities as a part of this $35 million plan, outside of the Rec/IM, that involve a single cent of University dollars.

Over the course of the last several years Eastern Michigan University has been forced to make a series of incredibly tough cuts to many academic and student programs. Meanwhile, the Athletics Department has enjoyed generous increases to its budget. These priorities are misplaced. Therefore, if the Board of Regents was or is able to locate any General Fund dollars to support the renovation of athletics facilities beyond the Rec/IM, then we insist that those funds be re-invested in the academic and student affairs programs and services that have been cut or under-funded in the past years.

We urge the University’s Board of Regents to not approve any plan for new or renovated athletics facilities, beyond the Rec/IM, if that plan involves the use of any University dollars. Student Government will continue to monitor the situation.

RE: Football Facilities!!!!!
What was crazy is how this got out before the BOR had a chance to approve. Kind of like announcing that a couple bought a house before their offer was accepted.

That said, I am assuming, taking Frank's comment, that we will raise 15M privately. That leaves 20M left TBD.

The BOR and university hopefully will not act like politicians: "read my lips, no new taxes..." drawing lines in the sand which are divorced from reality. Things in the real world are rarely black and white or simple.

Here I see two big issues which mitigate, some or much, of the funds the U might put in:

1). The IPF would no longer needed for EMU athletic teams. It could be rented out 100% of the time as a money-making venture. How profitable? I don't know the economics of an IPF but that in the private sector it would be a money making enterprise. It is paid for. I'm not pie-in-the-sky and say hey, we can make 20M over 20 years and finance 20 year bonds with the income stream. Who knows how much the IPF could net each year after expenses...

2). I assume EMU athletics will vacate Bowen. Is that correct? If so, then the West campus project has benefits to the broader university, i.e., frees up additional office space which has significant value to the university. How much is that space worth to the U? IDK.

Anyway, I hope the student government folks come to know and understand all the ramifications (e.g., a money making venture, more office space, etc.), not simply the costs.

Might add EMU has experience with their hotel/golf facility out by S. Huron.

BTW, one question for anyone: I read that the soccer field will need to be moved and reoriented. Currently the field runs north/south. I believe the new field would be east/west. Is that a problem because of sun? (I assume all baseball fields, football fields, etc. run north/south. I believe that is a MLB rule to protect the batters from getting blinded at bat).

You can be sure that the vast majority of the student government is made up of little Bunsis robots that will spout misinformation to try and squash any athletic progress or expenditures.

Will be interesting to see if Lyke can pull it off. If the big $ donors are on board, the student government chatter is mute. Their protests will fall on deaf ears.

what is a bunsis robot? do you know anything about student govt other than this one email?

EMU students have paid millions of dollars to fund athletics that they largely don't care about. their letter is completely reasonable. i love EMU athletics, i hope the expansion happens and i hope students don't pay for it. i'd rather keep the current facilities than ask students to pay even more for something that doesn't benefit them.

I hear you, Aaron.

My point is how does one cost out (if that is the term) that this building project has several secondary benefits (free Bowen and the IPF) which might mitigate much of say 20M from the university.

Can EMU borrow say 20M and have the athletic dept pay it back over 20 years?

Again, it won't matter very much in the end. This was just a statement from group of about 7/8 undergrads.

So students at all of the other universities in the country help pay for athletics, but the special students at EMU should be exempted. More Bunsis wishful thinking, haha.

Dear EMUAARON,
EagleTough said what I was going to say, especially about the MAC schools. Both Western and Central pay about the same as Eastern from their general funds to fund athletics. If, I am not mistaken don't Central and Western also charge more than Eastern for tuition and room and board, if living in the dorms?

It is your conjecture that the majority of EMU students don't care about athletics. EMU is an FBS Division 1 football program. If those students do not wish to be part of EMU in its entirety, then they should go to Lawrence Tech, Wayne State, Walsh College, etc. It's not very rational for students coming into an university and then start demanding changes. The students got accepted, and enrolled into an university with D1 athletics that provide mutual benefits to those who enjoy sports and those who do not.

If this report was about a new IM and Rec building and students had to pay $300 a semester for the renovation they would be up-in-arms just the same -- maybe not student government. It's just like any public good, there will be folks that believe since they don't use it then its not worth their money. Make the state of michigan pay for something, they've been funding higher ed less and less over the last decade leaving the schools to raise tuition.

However, I think getting close to $15 million is an amazing accomplishment that any other renovation non-athletic building on campus surely wouldn't be able to get at EMU. We need better alumni communication and fundraising.

Here is the rub on the upgrading of the rec/im. A donor offered to pay 5 million to upgrade it but the female interim president said no that the money had to go into the general fund or not at all. It was not at all.07-coffee3

Wow. Donors should be able to donate and restrict as they see fit.

The Rec/IM should be no different than the Halle Library, or the project we're discussing.
