RE: Football Facilities!!!!!
And reminder: $9 million of funds were raised before the public stage of the campaign. In major capital campaigns like this, usually about 50% is raised before a public announcement is even made (which still hasn't happened, this was a news article, not a press release). I would think the development team in athletics is shooting for at least $15 million to be raised from donors. Now is the time more development officers will be reaching out to lower level donors for funding, as well as soliciting donations online, etc.

Football Facilities!!!!!
I had heard that the plans for the scoreboard on top of the indoor facility would be the largest in the nation!

Dear EAGLE KING,
Do we want to spend the entire nine million on a score board? Ha-Ha.

This is getting weird.

the BOR has not approved the project. It get out in the press. They toss up a website page to college donations.

Not what I would have expected.

I would have expected a BOR vote and then a big glitzy rollout with famous EMU athletes (e.g., Charlie Batch. T.J. Lang, etc.), television cameras, etc.

Instead the story breaks last night in the Detroit Free Press and here this morning.

Keith Stone is an EMU alum and major gift donor to EMU athletics. He's CEO of CSI Enterprises, which founded the Power2Change Foundation.

We all have to be unspeakably grateful for Keith Stone.

Frank, indeed. It has happened (happening).

I hope this raises a lot of money--including a lot for the academic departments that will need to fix up space in Warner/Bowen.

I don't understand the suites on the north endzone. Why not tear down the west stands and put the new fieldhouse there? Would love to see it come kinda close to the field with a row of suites, club seating, and press box near the top.

What you suggest makes sense but would be expensive.

Also, assuming nothing is done to the west stands I didn't read anything about a new press box.

In an ideal world, they WOULD tear down the west stand and re-do something with new stands, or field house/stands, etc. and move the field what about 25 feet to the east (closer to the East stands, they are 25 years young).

Two points: What would it add? 3-5 million? If we are trying to set-up Rynearson to last another 25 years, then the west stands gotta go. If we focus on the east stands and put sweet suites on the west, then we may just have a nice little stadium for another generation (or two). Second, why put premium seating at the worst sight line?

One thing about Rynearson, as most know:

It is really 'two stadiums' which are adjacent, etc. They were built at different times, etc. They share the same design, etc. but are free standing 1/2 stadiums

The west stands are what 50 years old. The east stands are 25 years young (insert joke about 'hardly used' - kind of like the 10 year old car with 50K miles on it).

As Masttg indicates, the plan seems to address everything except for the west stands and press box. We would still have a 50 year old west stands.

The shame is that the old west stands are preferred by fans and the newer east stands are usually almost empty.

RE: Football Facilities!!!!!
The other downside is what it does to T&F:

Bowen is pretty old and worn, but it has a balcony holding over 1,000 people. Good for a MAC indoor T&F championship.

Rynearson has enough seats, etc. to hold even the Jr. Olympics (which it has done several times).

The new T&F facilities, indoor and outdoor, seemingly will be pretty limited. My guess it would take some work to hold the MAC T&F championships. Where would the seating be for 500 fans or participants?

Hopefully Dr Lyke is concentrating on how to get fans close to the football field to create an exciting atmosphere for football vs displacing 500 fans. The administration that renovated Rynearson accommodated the 500 fans and separated the 15000 football fans.

Let's get it right this time.

Exactly. What is the point of removing the track if the field is no closer to a grandstand?

I'm assuming that it would be a 300 meter track. Does anyone know about that?

Simple: The football field must be moved to free up enough space for a much larger football building.

I was posting from a phone so I was terse.

As far as the placement of the football field other than moving it south toward the Convo, I have NO idea if they will try moving it 10 - 15 feet toward say the west stands. If so, fans on the east stands will feel like they are in a different zip code.

They could do a few different things:

1). Drop the field, but that adds, not subtracts, new seats to where the track is now.

2). They could move the football building to at least the goal line and reduce seating at the north end by eliminating section the section where students/band are seated. I believe the USC coliseum was reconfigured like that to reduce seating.

3). I would like a new press box to sit where the top say 10 rows of the west stands are between the 35 yard lines. Drop a press box into the stands instead of build on top of it (as it typical). That would reduce the west side capacity some.

All I can say, I hope EMU has very good architects to come up with a 'home run' design on the field. It won't be easy.

I agree 100% when anyone says, removing the track but not moving the field closer to the stands is like smh. Instead of looking a red cinder track we'll look at green Field Turf or whatever the green stuff is. that glass is still half empty.

Dear JonesGodard,
Do you know if he is one of the donors?

Dear Friends,
It is futile to try and guess where everything is going to be, or where things should be. Let's wait to see what the design may be. I'm sure there will be two or three concepts that architects come up with for review.

Absolutely!!!

It is his 6M which should make this transformational project a go.

Without a really big gift I doubt the project would ever see the light of day and EMU would be doing a band-aid approach to Rynearson and the football building for many years to come.
