Misleading title. If anything this will extend the reach of ESPN... but also it's competitors too.

Quote:"The Internet’s official home for cat videos announced the creation of YouTubeTV, a streaming service includes nearly every channel on which college football is played — ABC, CBS, FOX, CBS, the ESPN family of networks, Fox Sports 1 and BTN. The best part for consumers? YouTube TV will cost only $35 a month, with personalization options for up to six members on each account."

If Aresco can swing this... what are the odds that the American signs a tv deal with... everyone?

It cannot be good for ESPN. The bulk of their money comes from cable subscribers. Unless I misunderstood the article, they are losing more and more subscribers every month.

If it wasn't good for ESPN, they wouldn't have signed up to be broadcast by youtube.

Youtube isn't the content creator, they are the transport. With youtube, ESPN will reach more eyeballs, not less.

I'm very excited for this. I already love YouTube Red. I'd sign up for this in a heart beat. Unlimited mobile access to all major sports in the AAC on top of the #1 app I already use, with the ability to cast videos to any smart tv or chromecast... This is a slam dunk that adds to the AAC's exposure by proxy.

But... will they get the same money they are getting now? As i see it, it will help the AAC. ESPN is not our friend, and this will give viewers many options other than subscribing to cable to watch CFB.

The way I see it, ESPN could double dip. Youtube pays for the right to broadcast ESPN content, and advertisers pay for the increased traffic to their ads. Their content just became more potent because now it is available extremely easily on the internet, to a potential market of Billions

ESPN is the safest of the bunch. They are getting included with most streaming services. CBS not so much.

Yep. Having CBS-SN will be great! Every single game of the AAC is on one of the ESPN's or CBS-SN. Out of the 10 conferences only the AAC and MWC have games on CBS/SN and of course Army and Navy.

Cheers!

Correct.

This way ESPN can still track higher viewership which will help them secure more $$$ from advertisers.

ESPN doesn't obviously get viewership ratings from pirated sites via Europe and Youtube is still paying a FEE to all of those channels, including ESPN, plus, can provide easy tracking info for ad use.

ESPN knows they have lost millions of "subscribers" from the old cable/satellite model so this is just another way for ESPN to continue the revenue stream in a different way.

espn is losing viewers month to month yes but still way way way ahead of everyone else, especially when it comes to actual viewers. If ESPN dies it means sports in america has died and so has every other sports network.

Eyeballs are one thing, but money is another. They may be staying ahead of things, but it remains to be seen whether it ultimately benefits them, and us in turn.

Like it's been said before, ESPN is losing cable subscribers. They may pick some of those back up from Youtube, but will it be the same $7 per household?

I think that the best outcome is that the Youtibe option is more palatable for people, and that even at a lower price, they end up reaching more people, potentially enough to break even or gain. Only time will tell if this will happen.

Best thing is that ESPN no longer has to rely on Neilson to tell them who's watching. If you end up with the Youtube option, be sure to have AAC games on all the time. I don't care if it's Cincy-Uconn (Tune in Saturday November 25th!).

Being on this package and stuff like Sling and Vue is better for ESPN than not being on it, because that would mean surrendering the entire sports streaming market to FOX, NBC, and now finally CBS. But I'm sure ESPN would prefer none of these things existed.

They're being forced to sign up for these things or risk being left behind. Kind of ironic after years of them forcing cable companies to put ESPN on their basic package so that grandma has to pay $8/mo for ESPN in order to get HGTV

Fully agree. They are just positioning themselves in the best possible way in the changing landscape.

I love the way things are going. It's actually a bit ridiculous when you think about the cable bundling of the (soon to be) past. Now, the Sci-Fi channel is going to have to produce something watchable in order to stay afloat. It's every man for himself, which should produce the best tv.

agree with this. Still the only way to compete with cable bundling for internet and tv is to borrow passwords from friends/family and not actually pay for all of the services you want.

Had a buddy tell me how much he was saving each month since he stopped subscribing to cable. Come to find out he uses his brothers netflix, his parent's espn login, and another friend's hulu subscription.
