NCAA Selection Committee Bias--Pete Thamel
Interesting piece on NCAA bubble teams and the effect of a P5 conference affiliation on the selection committee. I thought it was interesting that we were included as part of the favored conferences. For instance--

Last March, the five football power leagues, plus the Big East and the American Athletic Conference accounted for an astounding 92% of the at-large bids. And the three teams outside the sport’s highest echelons that got in—Dayton, VCU and Wichita State —wouldn’t be classified as mid-majors by anyone who follows college basketball closely. All three pay their coaches millions, boast first-class facilities and have reached the Final Four. Essentially, no true mid-major received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament last year. Think about that. That’s insane. “There has to be a way to do this better,” says Doug Elgin, the commissioner of the Missouri Valley Conference. “There’s a mindset that Team A in a power league is better than Team X in a non-power conference.”

The final conclusion is that there is an imbalance on the selection committee that causes a natural selection bias. Eventually they will figure out the same issue exists with football. The G5 isn't structurally excluded from the CFP---its a selection committee composition issue. If the CFP selection committee was one rep each from each FBS conference---an undefeated G5 team would have no problem making the payoff.

Tulsa made the NCAA Tournament last year. Teams from the AAC have no reason to cry about "unfair" treatment...07-coffee3

last year was nice...but the 2 prior years before that we were literally the first team out every year by committee word, smu in 14, temple in 15..we were literally always the conference that had the team that had a legit argument to make the tourney but always got passed over

i honestly think tulsa last year was them throwing us a bone becuase we were about to make a uproar ...
if we had gotten screwed last year for the 3rd year in a row i could see aresco start pushing for a AAC rep, we are the only major bball conference without a rep in the commitee

As long as the AAC is included in the bias, I think the system is working wonderfully.

So the ACC was being treated "unfairly" all those years in a row where Virginia Tech was the first team out? Nonsense. The American has consistently been the 7th best conference. It's no guarantee that they HAVE to get bids from their questionable teams. Especially with a ton of bad losses...07-coffee3
