This will all blow over in a few days. What this might accomplish for us is snuffing out any future transfers to Minn this spring or summer.
He likely won't wind up at another MAC school anyhow, he'll get enough P5 interest. But surprised we didn't put that restriction in his release. At least prevent him from landing at a MAC West school.
Self report what? It's a non-story except in the minds of the WMU faithful and one or two of their media members. Word is WMU complained to Minnesota before this went public, MN investigated and apparently somebody at WMU didn't like the answer (or non-answer) so they fed this rumor/"story" to your intrepid "reporter." I think WMU's motivation is clear, but unfortunate Spillane gets the blowback. Doesn't take a genius to figure he wanted to come play for Fleck, and likely was aware MN has several unused scholarships right now (doesn't need to be told, could see that on scholarship grid on any one of the MN fan sites). No player of his caliber announces they're transferring and gets their release without some prior back-channel inquiries to find out where they may be able to end up. Usually parent or HS coach does it, words chosen carefully, and the college coach doesn't initiate any contact. Easy to do without breaking rules.
We'll see what happens -- WMU's hand-waving may have scared him away from MN or vice versa, but if his recruiting goes quiet for a month or so I wouldn't be surprised to see him surface at MN. Grad transfer OL and DB is what I'd be looking for in the future. (And yes we all understand Spillane is not in that category, smh).
When a Minnesota fan tells you that a potential violation is a non-story, you gotta take their word to the bank. They run a spotless program w/o any national embarrassments in their recent past. I've NEVER seen a Minnesota fan downplay questionable behavior before.

Not when being a booster gets you on PJ's chartered boat on Lake Minnetonka.

So true, so true. They're the cleanest gophers in all the land. :) Hey, I'm not saying something DID happen -- but as far as eyebrows raised and people going WTF (not worst-to-first), the burden is on Minnesota that has been kinda cut-throat "all business" mentality taking So many recruits, and our star on D going into his senior year shockingly Leaving + a reliable reporter having sources saying there was communication with Minnesota & Spillane (+possibly others). Nothing's Illegal -- just potentially rule-violating, but the main concern is whether something was crossing ethical lines, rule breaking or not (something can be technically rule breaking but not really a Bad thing; and vice versa).
An article on this site: http://www.thedailygopher.com/2017/3/2/1...n-michigan
The author criticized my Hustlebelt comment! I bit back in their comments. :)

RE: Spillane out?
No matter how credible Pepper's sources are, still feel he should've waited until Spillane announced his destination before reporting on it. If Spillane winds up playing for Lovie Smith or someone else, no matter what circumstance led to it, Pepper is going to have some egg on his face (even if unfairly).

"We are not recruiting students from Western Michigan". Notice the Present tense. It's not untrue that they aren't currently recruiting especially with all the attention that's on them now. He did NOT say "we never recruited students from Western Michigan".

They will probably self-impose 1 less practice this spring. Probably on a day that they would've taken off anyways like before the spring game.

They will probably just put Row The Boat in the corner for a day... "no PJ you can't say, gesture or otherwise mention Row The Boat for one entire day! Do it again and you lose Elite for a day!"
