Because we convinced every snow flake that they need to go college to be successful soooooooo the federal government guarantees student loans for anyone with a pulse sooooooo colleges raise tuition knowing the federal government will loan it to the student. A simple matter of transferring money from the federal government to the universities using the students as "money mules".

In addition to the scholarship limits, there are also limited coaching spots and plenty of up-and-coming quality coaches.

Plenty of examples of P5 schools that over-pay coaches and then carry the payroll albatross for years after the coaches are canned. There are also plenty of examples of diminishing returns on salaries, facilities, and the arms race.

Seriously? Because you can get a degree in something called "a literary view of Harry Potter." Or African American Studies. Or a Masters in the Anthropological effects of Modern Middle School Females and their Clicks.

We have allowed these programs to specialize to such a degree that it is not unusual to find a classroom with one professor and 2 students in it.

How do you pay for that kind of ratio? $1400 + per 3 hour class, MINIMUM. It's insane.

College football would be very different without some of those majors.

The main cost in college not tuition but room and board and yes colleges now a days are more like resorts.

There are simply too many good players for that to ever happen.

Money goes so far.

If the autonomy conferences could offer more schollys again, that would be the end.

However, I don't think that's going to happen.

Whats to say they wont?

They threaten the ncaa with this or they break off and form a new league could happen. Either way, they get their wish.

That will not happen due to political, control and the tax advantages they enjoy. The higher the income the less likely it is that they separate. Hence they stay

At what point do they decide that the political, control, and tax advantages are worth less than what separation can get them? I think the NCAA could take the P5 to task in March Madness though, but then the bottom P5 would be the ones hurt, not the top P5.

And not "eventually" but starting right now.

this is also more of a top level p5 vs everyone else thing. Top of AAC coaching pool is very competitive vs bottom half of the G5.

Elite P5

Bottom P5 - Elite G5

Bottom G5/G4/op FCS

"It's going to be the coaching salaries that will kill us"

Not sure that is true. It's a complex issue.

If a school with a billion $ budget spends 15 Million on sports, that is only 1.5%. It's low cost advertising. Would many people out side of Alabama even know it has an University if it did not have a football program. Much of it may be from student fees, which is not money taken from academics.

Good coaches can easily mean 10,000 or more fans in attendance, which provides more money for its budget.

It can mean significantly more alumni contribution for both athletics and academics. Those contributions help build billion $ endowments.

UH had a 30% jump in applications after winning the Peach Bowl. TCU had a 42% jump after winning the Rose Bowl. Increases like those allow a school to increase enrollment and gain more outstanding students. Those gains are long lasting to some degree.
