We just can't seem to take that "next step" and get signature wins!

Six outs from a win, and instead gave up five runs in the bottom of the 8th. Sca

Roberson pitched great, which is good news.

Feeling out our pitching is going to be important in these early weeks. Still disappointing that Magestro, who we're counting on in the back end of the bullpen, was the one to give up the big inning late.

But ultimately we have about 20 arms on this staff, many of which are new faces or very young, but with high upside. Like it or not we'll need to have patience there.

Stealing a win today would be huge. Beehler on the hill and we need a great outing out of him.

Ole miss got the sweep today with an 8 to 6 win. Hawks were down 8 to 1 heading into the 8th before rallying but came up short. Disappointing sure but hopefully we can learn from this and use the experience to accomplish our true goal, win a regional

To win a regional, we need to beat teams like this.

Getting swept in a series in February, while disappointing, won't prevent us from beating a team like this in June. They swept a top-10 ECU team and have the # 1 freshman class in America this year. This was a good experience to show what level we need to get to. I think our pitching will improve dramatically over the course of the season and get us there.

We also still have opportunities for quality wins against Coastal (3 games), NC State (2 games), ECU (2 games), Florida Gulf Coast (3 games), UNC (1 game), and Maryland (2 games). Just about all of those teams will make a Regional, and a couple might host one too.

While it would have been very nice to get at least one win, it's still a long season with plenty of ranked teams to play. Unlike basketball, we can work on pitching rotation and take time to lock it in. Plus, I believe the hitting hasn't come around yet, but it will.

Not throwing in the towel by any means. Definitely a "feeling it out" period for sure. You guys follow it closer than i do, but to me it seems like every time we have a chance to make that next step, we miss out.

Depends on your definition of the "next step". When we beat # 1 UNC @ UNC, was that a "next step"? When we took the first 2 games in the regional in Columbia, was that a "next step"?

Baseball is different from basketball. We're not fully funded and have the smallest budget of any baseball power in America. Scalf does wonders with what he has. If we want to take the "next step" (whatever that may be) it's not really up to Scalf. It's up to us to provide more resources. Plain and simple.

But even so Scalf might just take us to Omaha anyways. He's that good.

Winning games regularly against teams that are in regional, that, is a next step IMO. Not a one off here and there. I think Scalf has done a GREAT job building a program and winning the league on a regular basis especially given the circumstances.

Many teams refuse to play us, especially at Brooks Field. We only get one, MAYBE 2 weekend series like the one against Ole Miss every year, and it usually occurs very early in the season and on the road.

I do recall taking 2/3 from Maryland at Brooks Field in 2015. And 1/3 from TCU on the road in 2012. We've also done well against Charleston ever since they joined the league. But otherwise the CAA slate lacks in quality baseball programs.

As for midweek, yeah, we have a better shot of scheduling Regional-caliber teams in NC and SC. But this year UNC refused to play us at Brooks Field, so add them to the list of teams refusing to play us here. And midweek games don't mimic what you'll see at a Regional typically, because each team is throwing, at best, their # 4 guy.

Hood needs more love too. He does the majority of the recruiting. Both are simply awesome at their jobs. The amount of prep work they put in each game is staggering. And if you listen to either of them talk baseball, you'd think they invented the game. I'm not even exaggerating.

We don't realize how lucky we are sometimes. We worry about Keatts leaving us, which is understandable. But Scalf is a highly experienced version of a Keatts but has never left and likely never will.

The only time Scalf will leave is when he retires. And that could be soon. But his blood runs teal.
