Quote:The empty seats at Bulldog Stadium and Save Mart Center for Fresno State football and basketball games are a troubling sign, but declining attendance is only part of a larger problem for an athletic department intending to get bigger and better.

The famed Red Wave, which helped build those venues and has served Fresno State athletic interests so well for so long, is going gray. And as is the case for most of the nation’s Division I schools, the athletic department is struggling to entice younger fans to games and build a sustainable base of season-ticket sales that account for a significant portion of its revenue.

Quote:Forty-nine percent of Fresno State football season ticket holders are 56 and older, according to a recent athletic department survey, with 9 percent 35 and younger. In basketball, 75 percent of season ticket holders are 56 and older and 4 percent 35 and younger.

Quote:But Fresno State’s overall ticket sales have dropped sharply the past five seasons, a disturbing trend for a department that for years counted gate receipts as its second-largest source of revenue behind university support. In 2016-17, it is fourth behind university support, fundraising and a Mountain West Conference/NCAA distribution.

Fresno State sold 15,404 football season tickets in 2016, compared to 18,432 in 2015. It sold 3,809 in basketball, down from 3,970.

The athletic department also has struggled to get students into its venues, and in theory they are the season-ticket holders and donors of the future – the next Red Wave.

The average number of student tickets distributed for football games last season was 1,730, down from 2,570 the previous year.

Ticket revenue, the majority from football, has correspondingly declined significantly.

In 2009-10, it accounted for 36.6 percent of a $18.4 million budget, or $6.76 million.

In 2012-13, it was 19.7 percent of a $25.6 million budget, or $5.04 million.

In 2016-17, it accounts for 12.6 percent of a $34.2 million budget, or $4.31 million.

While it does appear as though their support is in decline, the same can be said for a lot of universities, including many in the AAC. This is a nationwide trend that is not going away.

Also, I'm not sure if looking at season ticket numbers for fans under the age of 35 will tell you much. Those under 35 are "young" alumni without as much disposable income so they aren't typically the bulk of any program's season ticket holders.

Now, I do agree that student attendance is a problem because you hope they become the future ticket holders. This is also a problem at a lot of universities, including UCF, which is why corporate and "premium" seating is becoming more of a factor than anything else.

If they win again, people will be back.

I have been on this board for a while, I don't remember too many people begging for Fresno State.

15K season tix in fball would be quite a bit more than a few of our members. 3.8K season tix in bball is also more than a few of our members, more than a few of them even average (students included).

It was At the time of Boise and SDSU having cold feet early in 2013, and BYU outright refusing Aresco's invitation, many on the board starting pushing for UNLV and Fresno to appease Boise and SDSU. Yes, there were posters on here who turned to Fresno when it was accepted that AF and BYU would not join Boise and SDSU to the AAC. Desperate times on here. I'm certain that some posters on here would have taken Fresno over ECU and Tulsa.

Cheers!

Our economy being a wreck has something to do with this nationwide trend among the under 35 and young grad population as well. Not to mention people over 35 that lost jobs and either haven't found comparable remployment or are still unemployed. This hasn't happened entirely because millennials aren't as interested in college sports as older alums/general fans.

At the time, Boise was making noise about backing out as we did not appear to be serious about creating a true western division. Id be just fine if we had Boise, SDSU, Fresno, and UNLV as part of the western division. We'd be a nationwide conference, with likely a higher payout, and would have gone to and won the access bowl in 2013, 2014, and 2015. We also would have had more ranked teams than we had over that 2013-2016 period as Boise and SDSU both spent time ranked. My guess is Fresno wouldn't be having nearly the same problem if they were in a new successful nationally relevant AAC that stretched from sea to sea.

Who's to say they make the access slot if they were in the AAC?

Love how real you are "Phil Lacio". 07-coffee3
