With the proposed on-campus stadium now on hold and the Eagles tripling the rent at the Linc, what is Temple's next move?

Pay bribes to the "community".... 03-puke

Temple will be playing all its home games at the Linc for the next 20 years.

Don't waste your time reading any other details. Its not happening.

RE: Temple's Stadium Woes
When Temple was in the process of getting the 10k seat bball stadium, they faced push back from city officials. Coach John Chaney and Bill Cosby both blasted city officials publicly.

Eventually Temple ponied up $5 million for a community project. It's pay to play when you do business in Philly.

The recently opened soccer fields faced protest from the community and a few local politicians. The city wanted the $15 million that Temple was paying for the land so the city backed Temple in this case. Temple added another $20 million to removed the old buildings on the site and develop the land into playing fields.

My point is that there was no doubt that the football stadium would also face tough opposition. City officials need to know what's in it for them ..

Trust me, no Temple fan is going to Chester to watch football. Only soccer cultists go there voluntarily.

Temple fans:

I know nothing about the area, but I remember some discussion of that stadium when Nova was considering it... It seems pretty and new, connected to freeways, and not that far from a distance perspective. What makes it so bad for football? Is it the neighborhood? Bad sightlines and amenities? Bad traffic and parking? Just curious. All I can see is what's on google...

It would be like USF playing in East Tampa, if East Tampa was located in Plant City.

Temple's Stadium Woes
I remember when SMU played at the cotton bowl. It was painful and the neighborhood sucked. The drive sucked. The team sucked too (other than that Arkansas game).

This is worse. The stadium is nice, but it's in a dump with no public transport to the location. Wish they would have found the money and the desire to build it by temple earlier and put the union there. Would be good for the community too...other than the local activists trying to get rich off the process and the idiot lemmings who follow them mindlessly.

Kenny,
You are correct. I'll bet that Temple will always play football there. The only way they don't is if they drop football. Oklahoma got a 2-0-1 with Temple; its official now. I have to go back and dig that up because I can't remember who I was arguing my point that Temple wouldn't be playing in an OCS with. BTW, sorry Temple fans.

Cheers!

Temple tried to team up with an MLS team for an on campus stadium in the late 1990s, but the owner group wasn't awarded a franchise at that time.

The soccer stadium is located in Chester because Delaware County Republicans, especially Dom Pileggi, wanted to reward campaign donors by having the state pay for the project including site improvements. Chester was chosen so that they could use the completely absurd premise of economic redevelopment to try to justify the wasting of state funds on the project. Anyway it looks like Temple will play at the Linc for the foreseeable future.

BOOYAH!!!

"A Temple University spokesman said plans to build a 35,000-seat football stadium on the school’s Main Campus in North Philadelphia are still on, despite a recent report that claimed otherwise."

I wish this would happen to USF as it would fast track building our OCS.

However, I understand the need to be cautious in green-lighting expense facility projects as there is still a lot of questions on the longterm sustainability of being a G5 school.

I was thinking, you don't waster one and a quarter million dollars at a public university. That stadium is getting built.

RE: Temple's Stadium Woes
I am here in Philly perhaps about 7 miles from the Temple campus. I would say that I think that Temple is doing some behind the scenes lobbying with local politicians to try and get this done. This lobbying has to be done without making a bunch of noise. There is no doubt that Temple will have to pony up some additional money for something for the community. Someone mentioned a Charter school or perhaps a rec center. My guess is Temple will need to put up anywhere from $5 mil to $15 mil. Temple mentioned earlier that they stadium would include retail stores but that's not enough. The community will need something that looks like a gift.

Last year when Temple built soccer and a field hockey fields, they agreed to partner with a local labor union to create a jobs training center. This is Philly, you don't get something for nothing.

A local private developer this week announced that work will start this summer on a $150 million dorm. Won't be any protest over that.

You're not taking into the consideration the extra 200-300 capacity needed when Cincinnati comes to town.

We had a little of behind the scenes dealing with the Mayor and Governors offices When the sale was announced as approved it was already done and little protesters could do. This will follow a similar course. A few dozen nut jobs are not going to stop a stadium.
