Exclamation Appy gets 2 for 1 with North Carolina
Appalachian St gets another P5 as they snagged a 2 for 1 vs UNC. 2 @ UNC and 1 at Appy St. App got Miami at home last year. I didn't want Appy and Charlotte moving up to FBS because I thought it may hurt us (ECU) getting H&H's vs the ACC like we've done every year in the past. 5 schools in Virginia, North and South Carolina moving up to FBS (Liberty, Old Domnion, Charlotte, App St, Coastal Carolina) within a few years of each other!! Not good for ECU IMHO...But good get App St!

Cheers!

The 70 points probably scared them off a little.

Yeah it did. But all the one and dones and 2 for 1's those 5 new FBS schools will provide the ACC 7 in those 3 states will hurt ECU's ability to get H&H's vs them. ECU has been able to get H&H's vs P5 unlike any other non-P5 school except maybe BYU who has more 2 for 1's on their current schedules. I don't like that, nor do I want H&H's with any of the new FBS area schools.

Cheers!

I do think you are right. ECU was able to push and play the PR game for UNC and NCSU to play the only other NC FBS public school in signing a series. Now that there are 3 FBS teams, UNC and NCSU will be more than happy to schedule them, especially if the can get 2-1. I see UNC scheduling Coastal since they go to SC two times every 12 years. Much like NCSU scheduling ODU to get back in VA.

RE: Appy gets 2 for 1 with North Carolina
ECU has been very helpful to VT by scheduling the ECU home game in years VT doesn't travel to UNC or Duke. The ACC put UNC and Duke in the same home away cycle for VT so we needed help from ECU to have a game in North Carolina every year. I've heard that it is very important to recruiting. As long as UNC and Duke are in the same cycle, ECU can expect to continue playing VT every year. Currently we play ECU every year until 2025 with the exception of 2021. A year in which we play both Notre Dame and Michigan at home and probably want the 7th home game to make the season ticket package more expensive.

With ECU's relationship with both Va Tech and West Virginia, plus continuing games with UNC and NC State, there's not much room for any more in state opponents on their OOC schedule.

What I would like to see is for both UNC and NC State to play either App State or ECU every year, in a way that insures that Appy and ECU always have one of those schools on their schedule. Not sure that's possible with App needing to give 2 for 1's.

I also am curious as to whether having several more FBS teams in the region influences future scheduling. By my count, there are 2 additional FBS teams in NC (App & Charlotte) along with 1 in SC (CCU) and 2 in VA (ODU & now Liberty in 2018). As I mentioned in a separate post on the SBC forum, there are several factors at play. First is the fact that the ACC TV money is substantially less than its counter parts in the Big 10 and SEC. Second is that with ACC expansion, the ACC is now geographically spread out leading to home games against worthy conference opponents where the team has difficulty selling tickets (i.e. no sense of rivalry). Third is the selection criteria used by the CFB playoff committee where it appears to place more value on close wins against FBS (even if G5) opponents over big home wins against FCS opponents. All 3 seem to be conspiring together to produce a few unexpected visits of P5 teams to G5 stadiums.

Of the above recent FBS call-ups, ODU has had the most scheduling success. App's AD is taking a page out of the Terry Holland playbook. When ECU was in CUSA, TH made a point to schedule as many regional OOC games as possible mainly because CUSA opponents were so far away that there was very little sense of rivalry. Scheduling regional opponents made for a more compelling home schedule to which tickets could be sold. I recall that ECU OOC games were higher priced tickets than conference games. App is attempting to get as many compelling regional games as possible because it will take years to develop any sense of rivalry with some of our new SBC foes. This phenomenon is not limited to G5's as Wake Forest & UNC have scheduled a non-conference home/home in 2019/2021. At some point, tickets need to be sold to supplement the TV money. I think App scheduling Miami is/was a 1 time thing because Miami has difficulty selling tickets at home lately and also ACC TV money makes it difficult for them to payout the $1M plus being sought by potential FBS opponents for 'money games'. App scheduling Wake Forest was not surprising as App & WF are separated by only 80 miles and used to play somewhat regularly (though always at WF) years ago and those games usually sold out.

If you are a ACC P5, I think you begin to schedule regional 1-for-1 or 2-for-1 series with G5 teams. These games are likely to be sell-outs at both venues. And for the P5 team, if you just happen to have that rare magical 12-0 or 11-1 season then having played such a schedule makes you more appealing to the playoff committee. I just do not foresee a scenario where a G5 makes it to a 4-team playoff.

So to return to the original question, what is the impact on future scheduling and specifically for ECU? My guess is that it will make it slightly more difficult for ECU. One can only speculate as to whether the recently announced 4 game ECU/App series resulted from that.

Sounds like an argument for ECU to be a conference with all the recent regional FBS move ups.

ECU, ODU, JMU, Charlotte, AppSt, Coastal Car, Liberty, Ga ST, Ga So

Should form a new FBS conference. Lots of games against close regional rivals.

Historical rivalries notwithstanding, no G5 should ever get a straight home/home with a P5.

How does that possibly help the P5???

Most should be buy games, at the P5 home stadium. A few 2-for-1's or 3-for-1's might be warranted in certain cases.

I think you missing a key point. UNC has not re-upped with a new contract but has with APP and Charlotte. I expect NCSU to do the same. I think the every three year model ECU had will be impacted due to the additions of these teams. I have stated I believe the model will be for 7 games.

P5/@p5
@FBS/FBS
FBS payout game
FCS tune up game (Yes I would love to scrap)

Trips every three years to ECU will be hard with teams going to ODU, APP and Charlotte. I have a feeling Coastal will enter the mix as well. I think it may go to 1 once ever 8-12 years. Not say it is right, but just what I think we will see.

In fairness, you can;t have it both ways. If you want schools higher on the totem poll to treat you fairly, with home and homes, you haveto be willing to do the same with those below you on the totem poll. Otherwise you are being a hypocrite. I know our AD has that policy: he won;t play any team without it being a home and home (or one off neutral site game), either teams higher on the food chain, or sunbelt and CUSA teams (other than FCS). The deal recently signed with WKU for a 2 for 1 was the first time we've not offered a pure home and home, and WKU actually wanted it that way.

I know it's being hypocritical. Note that I didn't say I want 2 for 1's with any of the new area FBS schools. I suppose I should have put it this way, Id rather ECU didn't play them at all. There's nothing wrong with that. I doubt you'd want to play ECU or Southern Miss ever again.

Cheers!
