Moreover, this is not the same scenario as the last two coaches, whose only flirtations with success were from flat out luck. I'm not saying I'd renew or extend his contract after a year like this, but I definitely wouldn't fire him. Frankly, I'm curious about what that team could do in a year with one very big distraction gone and finally - finally - a frontcourt whose second option doesn't completely freeze when you feed him the ball.
In short, I still think next year's team will be stronger than this one, that's why I'm all in on Murphy.
I actually agree with you that minus Mangum and Lee next year's team could be better especially if Thompson improves and matures (haven't seen that this season) and we have a scoring threat up front which should be Minnie. However how many more seasons are we going to be satisfied with superior talent and mediocre results? Tell me what makes Murphy a good coach when he can't get these guys to buy into his system on defense this year or hasn't an offensive scheme that would work in high school? I haven't see him address or fix the problems during this free fall.

It was a combination of Jim Stapleton, and that sports-lovin AAUP.

Quote:On the day that Eastern Michigan University fired its basketball coach earlier this year, one of the school’s regents, Jim Stapleton, scolded athletic department officials for the decision.
Not necessarily because he thought coach Charles Ramsey had done a stellar job - in six years, Ramsey compiled a 68-118 record. But Stapleton believed the $176,416 it cost to buy out the remaining year of Ramsey’s contract was an expense the cash-strapped school could not afford.
The decision showed “a stunning lack of sensitivity to where we find ourselves fiscally as an institution,” Stapleton said at the time.

RE: Candidates
I hate to break up the good will when we agree on so much.
I really think that Murphy has a plan for this offense that basically looks for either Mangum or Lee or Timmy to slice and dice after trying to feed. Call us the fighting Stackhouses. Of course, like last night early, if the 3 is there, shoot that instead.
That worked until it stopped. I mean, for a minute there I believed in Lee again. Then better yet, Mangum showed us one-half of the reason Lee rides the pines.
After that we went back to rifling the ball at each other on the extreme perimeter, too far out to feed the frontcourt. That cannot possibly be Murphy's intention.

RE: Candidates
One of our biggest recruiting defencies was not signing a true point guard for this season that's one reason I think we will be betwillnext year
There is no true on the court leader on this team I am disappointed our 3 seniors didn't do this

Paul Jackson's play at PG next year will be key. He is a true PG.
As I've suggested I think next year's team has a true PG (Jackson), true PF (Minnie), true C (JT4), true SF (Bond).
