Won't have a conference affiliation, at least not right away. Will start as an independent.

So incredibly stupid. But the Falwells have plenty of money to burn.

I'm hoping O'Brien and the App State AD got along in Alabama in December and will put together a home-and-home like we saw with Arkansas State.

Now is the time to find a new home for at least football program because once the floodgates open, we will be relegated back D1-AA with the rest of the MAC.

Good with that too. Or the ACC schools if we want to step it up a notch.

nah, everyone is catching their breath. the next big change in college sports will be driven by declining tv numbers and oversaturation. Good G5 programs like Toledo will find a place, high profile powerhouses will get the money, what happens to the lower level P5 schools getting good tv money but losing their fan base as they continue to chase the hype and Bama's, OSU's and USC's of their conference worlds? What happens to the Illinois, the Marylands, the Oregon States the Kansases the Vanderbilts will drive change in the future. Those folks are gonna be squeezed more than the Toledos and Houstons and Boise States who already know how to survive and prosper in the middle ground of college football.

The wildcard is the fan bases. Can college sports be influenced more by the students, alumni, boosters, local supporters than the ADs and TV companies chasing the money? Will there be a point where we take back the tradition of Saturday football, tailgates and student and student-athelte oriented scheduling? Or do we allow our sports to become property of tv contracts that really only bring in a couple million here or there and some tv exposure. The big $ will continue to be there for 15-20 name teams. For everyone else the value of TV driven sports is in decline and there will eventually be blowback.

THIS CANNOT BE STRESSED ENOUGH. MACtion sucks! I only support it now because I have no choice and the MAC needs all the support it can get...but let's be real, bring back college football Saturdays or the fan bases will decline greatly. Toledo needs to be doing everything in their power to grow the fan base, going the extra mile is expected. THINK BIG!

Liberty will meet Syracuse in 2019, 2020 and 2021.

Just bumping this for no particular reason other than I remember starting this thread and I just saw this story (the link is below).

And if anybody from Liberty's athletics department is lurking here 03-wink, be sure to bring the officials with you for the games in the Carrier Dome. 05-stirthepot

A LU fan here but not from the athletic dept. However, there was a post on the LU board at http://csnbbs.com/thread-809692-post-143...id14366470 that showed the missed FG against Toledo on 9/24/11 and there is discussion on who provides the officials with a home game with a indy. No one with as answer as yet.

Christian University named "The Flames?" Makes me wonder which side they're on.

Everyone running to Florida and now Ga for players, good players in the Carolina-Virginia area. App St leads the way. several of these smaller schools stepping up it seems. I google peaked at that Elon campus, so cool. I'd like to go on a driving tour and visit those campuses someday.

Down here in the Bible Belt, we've got Wake Forest Demon Deacons and Duke Blue Devils. Wake Forest is Baptist, while Duke was started by Methodists and Quakers (though is now officially independent).

Liberty has a ton of $$$... Would not mind them, along with James Madison in the MAC, if the conference ever expands... Nice doable road trips to that part of the country...

Can anyone produce facts that FBS is a financial gain forLiberty??? I wonder how the decision to go FBS was justified?

The first point to consider about Liberty is that they are different than most all other FBS and FCS schools. Sports at LU has always been the means to promote the school by the two Falwells, Sr. and Jr. who is the current prez. LU markets itself to it's customers/students very well. Example, Falwell Jr. encouraged all students to go to Williams Stadium at 3am to greet the FB team's return from Waco, and then announced that classes would be cancelled for next school day. Private schools, especially LU, with it's financial resources and not beholden to the State of Virginia for funding, gives it a tremendous position of flexibility. The unbelievable way Lu was able to create their FBS schedule beginning in 2018 speaks volumes how committed the admins and prez to using FB as a vehicle. As a Lynchburg, Va native, I've watched the joke of a athletic program in the early 1970s progress to where they beat Baylor.

Don't under estimate the desire, commitment and resources LU has to make FB succeed. It doesn't have to be a money maker for it to succeed. I've have an athletic interest with the school for 20+ years because I enjoy college sports. I've also wanted to tell Sr. and Jr. and others at times to simply zip it. Stop talking. Stop doing stupid things. And, when a big win comes along against a P5 school, I am rooting for them as a team and not as a university, which has warts and limitations. And what school is perfect? LU just does it in an "in your face" way that builds brand and interest. Do not underestimate the determination of LU to succeed.
