Penny hardaway and his crew were very fun to watch even for non tiger fans, they were playing above the rim, throwing alley oops from half court, posterizing fools under the rim, making noise nationally knocking off top teams, etc. I still think the tigers would have challenged for the national championship in penny's 2nd year if david vaughn didn't blow out his knee.
I posted this video once. I'll do it again. It's very long but it's awesome especially for those who never saw this period in tiger basketball. Skip to 15 minute mark if you're impatient. I promise you this video is worth watching. Younger fans who didn't see this era should definitely watch this video.
The best part is we didn't get caught cheating and the coach didn't leave us looking like some dummies. Penny hardaway has always represented "memphis state" very well. Imo, he is our most important tiger, and we should always let him know that.
I agree. Penny with a healthy Vaughn as a sophomore would be a great team IF they had a point guard (that problem sounds familiar?).
Those were the days. I remember telling everyone during the 2008 season when the whole group never missed a game that these were the golden years of Tiger BB and I might not see another era like that in my lifetime. So, I'm like you: I long for the days of great Memphis Tiger basketball!
Its good to see Penny with Coach Finch. What made this era special was the purely Memphis connections, from Coach Finch, to Penny and others. the 2008 team was a great squad and had some Memphis players (Allen, P. Niles), but Cal didn't think much of the local talent.
Again, another great time in the history of the program (which makes what Pastner said about the program non-sense).
X just didn't want to fool with all the drama that comes with home town talent. It's probably not just Memphis but almost anywhere a kid stays home to play for the local school.

What an atmosphere !!!! What a team!!!!! What great times !!!!!
It's happening but they call it football these days!
Memphis will never play for the national championship in football.
Never.
It doesn't even seem possible in basketball especially since we let the basketball program slide so far down under pastner.
What's really sad is so many fans in the memphis program (in bball and fball) don't even think of a national championship as a season goal.
I can tell you it bothers me a great deal that we don't have a championship. I'm getting to the point where i'm almost angry, because it seems like everyone is satisfied with being a good college team.
I'm not. You'll hear me talking about it. I won't be satisfied until we win a national championship.
I agree to an certain extent. Just getting to F4 requires a certain amount of luck; but that is my goal. Get to F4 and take our best shots. S16 is OK and a worthy accomplishment-should not be our goal.
