Johnson, Clark lead No. 18 Cincinnati past USF 68-54
Johnson, Clark lead No. 18 Cincinnati past USF 68-54
By FRED GOODALL
AP Sports Writer

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) Kevin Johnson scored 14 points and Gary Clark had 13 points and 14 rebounds as No. 18 Cincinnati bounced back from its first loss in two months with a 68-54 victory over South Florida on Wednesday night.

The Bearcats (23-2, 12-1 American) shrugged off last Sunday's nine-point loss to SMU and surpassed their victory total for last season. Kyle Washington had 13 points and nine rebounds, while Jacob Evans overcame early foul trouble to finish with 10 points.

USF (7-18, 1-13) snapped a 12-game losing streak last weekend and found a way to keep it relatively close until Cincinnati began the second half on an 11-2 run to build its lead to 41-24. Geno Thorpe led the Bulls with 19 points.

Cincinnati never trailed and limited USF to 36 percent shooting, while blocking eight shots and forcing 21 turnovers. The Bearcats led 30-22 at halftime and by as many as 24 points after the break.

TAMPA – It took a while, but the No. 18-ranked Cincinnati Bearcats gradually caught fire and easily beat South Florida 68-54 here Wednesday night.

The game actually was not that close. UC once led by 24 points, 66-42 with 3:26 left. USF put together a minor surge in the final moments, far too late to make an impact.

Senior guard Kevin Johnson led UC with 14 points. Junior forward Gary Clark had 13 points and 14 rebounds, junior forward Kyle Washington had 13 points and nine rebounds, and sophomore guard Jacob Evans scored 10 points for UC.

UC (23-3, 12-1 American Athletic Conference) clinched a first-round bye in the postseason AAC tournament (March 9-12 in Hartford, Connecticut), according to the league office. The Bearcats bounced back from a 60-51 loss at SMU last Sunday.

USF (7-18, 1-13 AAC) stands last in the league. The Bearcats bludgeoned the Bulls 94-53 in their first meeting this season, Jan. 29 at Fifth Third Arena.

With a small crowd watching at the 10,411-seat Sun Dome, the UC offense was sluggish to start the game. The defense did come to play, and the Bearcats led 30-22 by halftime.

Speaking of the “crowd,” the house included an ample portion of UC fans. Clad in red-and-black UC colors, there appeared to at least 200 Bearcats rooters scattered throughout the all-green Sun Dome seats.

USF carried a 12-game losing streak before winning its most recent game, 64-57 over East Carolina last Saturday.

GAME GLANCE: UC led 30-22 at halftime. The Bearcats shot only 35.7 percent in the first half, but kept USF at bay. The Bulls shot only 31.8 percent before the break.

UC led by as much as 11 points in the first half, at 27-16. The Bearcats never trailed, and were tied only once at 5-5.

Johnson led UC in the first half with 10 points. Clark had six points and nine rebounds in the first half, and Washington also had six points.

In the first 20 minutes, the Bearcats never seemed to get in sync offensively. UC entered the game ranked No. 11 nationally in fewest turnovers per game (10.5), but made seven turnovers in the first half alone.

UC did cause 11 USF turnovers in the first half, and the Bearcats also had seven steals to USF’s three in the first half.

UC rushed out of the door after halftime, with a 13-2 scoring binge. That put the Bearcats up 43-24 with 13:36 left, and the game essentially was over.

UC coach Cronin nearing 300 career wins

FINAL LOOK: UC wound up shooting 42.4 percent from the floor overall, while USF made just 36.7 percent. The Bearcats forced 21 turnovers and committed 10, with only three turnovers after halftime.

UC held a 36-16 lead on points in the paint.

HIGHLIGHT REEL: The play of the night came with 4:0 with 5 left in the game. UC freshman Jarron Cumberland chased a loose ball into the UC end, hit the floor as he seized possession, then handed off to point guard Justin Jenifer as Jenifer trailed the play. Jenifer, in turn, fired the ball to a streaking Evans, who slammed it home. That one delighted the UC contingent.

NUMBERS GAME
: UC entered the game ranked No. 16 nationally in the daily NCAA RPI (Ratings Percentage Index). USF was No. 279.

I disagree w/ Tom Groeschen re: the play of the game. The one he mentioned was certainly the most eye catching, but not the play of the game.

For my money, it came at the 8:20 mark of the second half. USF's 7 footer was trying to back Kyle down on the right, low block. Kevin Johnson was on the other side of the floor near the baseline. He saw that Kyle was shading the big guy to the high side instead of the low side. Kevin ran the base line and took the ball right out of the 7 footer's hands. After that play, USF never tried a traditional low post offensive play again. Kevin took them out of their 2nd half game plan.

P.S., thanks to Ctip for posting the articles!

Very happy with the win but this wasn't the type of game I was hoping to see to get UC's offense back going.

42% shooting, 33% from three, 60% from the FT line - all below where UC should be at against a bad opponent and below where they need to be to beat ncaa tourney teams. Caupain has to get out of his shooting funk or teams will just keep slacking off of him and negating his ability to get to the basket. Also, outrebounded by a poor rebounding team.

I think its fairly obvious that teams have now figured out how to slow down UC's offense with that zone defense. I'd expect to see that in every game the remainder of the season. For as much improved as UC's offense is this season, its still needs to be alot better if they want to make a run in March.

For whatever reason, UC always seems to play lack-luster and closer-than-it-should-be games down in Tampa... Even back in the old BE days...

I don't know if it's a "trap game" effect or what. But UC@USF is typically flatter and more "exciting" than this matchup looks on paper.

great post. This is one of those things that Kevin tends to do that go unnoticed by many. He's so active on defense and makes it so difficult on the other team, but it's not just his activity, it's the intelligence with which he uses it.

We do struggle down there, both in football and basketball. I do know if it is the distance or if the guys are not focused due to hitting the beach or what.

In basketball UC holds a 31-8 all-time lead in the series. Four of those losses have come in the last ten years when we traveled to Tampa (we did not lose to them from 1988-2005 but if you look at the splits we rarely roasted them down there either- and that was with the Huggins group that would destroy teams like USF all the time). Last year we only beat them by 3 on the road, and in 2014 were only able to beat them by 7.

I have been watching him lately. To me it seems like he is wanting to trap the guards but every time he looks for the other guys to come up and they don't. Just wondering if others have seen this or not. I wonder if Mick does not want the trap or the other guys don't see it.

Johnson freelances 85% on defense. Its works against the weaker competition but it always comes back to bite us against better teams. He go try jump every passing lane and he helps off ball on every drive. His ball denial is best I've ever seen though, he makes it damn near impossible to pass his man the ball, best I've ever seen. He should match up with every team PG the entire length of court when he's in game.

I noticed for 1st time all year we automatically doubled down when ball went into post and we didn't help off ball as much. We need play this type defense against teams in March. No over helping leaving open shooters. Mick is adjusting game by game to do whatever it takes to win. This most thinking outside box coaching I've seen from him. We have 5 D1 starting guards on our team, use them coach.

This is exactly what lost the game for UC and won it for SMU. SMU stopped doubling Clark and Washington and those two couldn't score consistently enough and subsequently there was no one to pass to.

Meanwhile, UC kept doubling or even at time just playing help defense which left SMU wide open for shots.

Yeah I don't understand how Washington hasn't improved passing out double teams. He shouldn't see nothing but double and triple teams at practice. Evans usually be one wide open and Washington refuses to pass him ball.
