Really will be nice to get some chemistry with a smaller lineup so that we can mix it up and force teams to deal with a bigger lineup and a smaller lineup. Love the versatility.

Cumberland seems to have a great basketball IQ and is letting the game come to him now and not forcing things.

This can't be true. Everyone knows damn well that Mick doesn't give a crap about offense.

This team is very capable of playing good offense and good defense.

They did a better job of attacking the basket last night but of course they were not playing a team as good as SMU.

I would like to see UC go with Jenifer, Caupain, and Evans in the game more with Jenifer at the point and see if Evans will be more aggressive and if Caupain can try to score a little more.

Washington frustrated me a few times by not kicking to wide-open cutters and instead forcing a difficult shot with two hands in his face. Something he did against SMU as well, if I remember correctly. Seems like he gets it in his mind when he gets the ball he's going up nomatterwhathappens.

RE: USF Game Thread
It was obvious they were forcefully told last night not to take early threes and try to get the ball inside instead. I quickly lost track and how many times I saw guys start to put up a three, then suddenly stop, bring the ball down, and wither pass or dribble towards the inside.

It wasn't smooth at all, but at least they weren't jacking up threes all night. Kind of like in the movie Hoosiers when Coach Dale makes them throw four passes before shooting each possession.

Yes it is like they are confused about what to do. That is a problem. The offensive execution should be second nature by now for most of these guys.

It would be interesting to see the percentage of practice time used for offense vs. defense.

RE: USF Game Thread
I can't give specific examples, but on more than one occasion, when Troy got the ball at the top of the arc, he would launch it inside to KW. This was a welcome sight compared to his performance at SMU, where every single one of those passes would just be passed along the perimeter to either KJ or JE3. Mick seems to be dissapointed with our lack of production inside.

RE: USF Game Thread
I'll say this, on the play of the game, where Cumberland dove to steal the ball got it to Evans who gave it to JJ then JJ made a really nice pass that led to a huge dunk by Evans, no way Troy makes that pass. He would have taken it himself and tried to get the and 1 call. People can continue to insist that troy is a PG, he plays PG but he is not a natural PG and we lose out on a lot of easy buckets because of it. I'm not saying JJ should be the starting PG, but I think JJ needs to get more opportunity, but the time for that has probably passed.

its coming soon. jenifer just makes its so much easier for everybody to score when he's in game. they played together more last night than i think ever.

RE: USF Game Thread
JJ really impressed me last night with his ability to drive, probe the lane and then suddenly shift direction or dish. Admittedly, it was against a very poor opponent. But those are just completely different skills from the ones Troy possesses.

It behooves this coaching staff to find ways to use JJ more, either in substitution for or combination with Troy. More guards on the floor has been a successful model for an increasing number of teams that play way into March. Villanova has made a pretty good showing with a multi-guard lineup and I think Mick has enough guards to replicate some of that as the season winds down.

Yes, it would be optimal if Washington had a better feel for passing out of the paint.

To be fair to Washington, I think he's definitely improved, especially on the defensive end, as the year has gone on, but still a lot of work to do.

Here's the thing, he's shooting 54% from the field and making 42% of his threes. He can be a bit of a black hole (though I'd argue he's made some nice passes to cutters as well), most of the time he's scoring efficiently enough that I'll look past him not passing out and missing a couple open cutters. He's far more of a net positive to our offense than a negative.

I definitely agree with this. You can see in his head he just gets it in his head that he needs to take a shot. The most frustrating ones for me is when he takes contested jumpers that are just completely out of the flow of the offense. But given his skills he deserves 2-3 of these WTF were you thinking shots a game.
