$ 50,000.00 pays for 5 scholarships. Works for me.

I'm very surprised they didn't do a licensing deal.

Why much does it cost to take down all the RTB stuff?

Hopefully less than $50k.
I'll pay for the gas to burn the jerseys with the oars on them.

If i had to guess, not very much. Most of the in-stadium stuff is just pulling down banners IIRC. The football facility stuff i think is all just fatheads, won't take long.

RE: Fleck and WMU have reached a deal on RTB
From the WMU News Release:
WMU, Fleck ink agreement to share 'Row the Boat' legacy
Release #1617-148; Feb. 15, 2017--Contact: Cheryl Roland (269) 387-8412
KALAMAZOO, Mich.-- "Row the Boat," the three-word mantra that became the catch phrase for Western Michigan University football success, will become the legal intellectual property of former Head Coach P.J. Fleck.
Recent conversations between the University and Fleck's agent have led to an agreement in which Fleck will legally assume ownership of the phrase and be able to use or transfer it at will. The motivational phrase, as Fleck has noted publicly, is one that is highly personal and grew out of the way he and his family coped with the loss of an infant son.
As part of the agreement and to honor Bronco football accomplishments and his time with the team, Fleck will make a yearly gift of $10,000 to support a scholarship to be awarded to a Bronco football player. The Fleck Family Football Scholarship will be awarded each year beginning in fall 2017.
The University will retain the right to use "Row the Boat" in its football materials and displays, recognizing and celebrating Fleck's tenure at WMU and the teams he coached. Fleck was named Bronco head coach in 2012. Over the next four years, the Broncos football program built itself into the 2016 team that boasted a 13-0 season record, won the Mid-American Conference championship and made a New Year's Cotton Bowl appearance against the University of Wisconsin. Fleck is now head coach at the University of Minnesota.
The Fleck scholarship gift follows and builds upon an earlier $50,000 gift commitment Fleck made to WMU. The gift was made as part of a larger capital campaign drive to renovate the Waldo Stadium coaches offices as part of stadium renovations completed in preparation for the Broncos' 2016 season.
A licensing agreement for "Row the Boat" between WMU and Harlan Sports Management, details the phrase ownership and use decisions. The Chicago-based company represents Fleck.

RE: Fleck and WMU have reached a deal on RTB
Seems like WMU could have leveraged for more, a lot more, but I'll take the $50,000.
To Fleck's credit, he built and coached the best football team in the history of WMU and brought more positive notoriety to the university than could have ever been expected. "Row-the-Boat" was part of that and something I appreciate.
That said, like trendy cloths, it is outdated now. Put it in the memory trunk - along with all the ridiculous black WMU uniforms - and let's move forward.
Go Brown & Gold!
Go Broncos!

Tells you a lot about what Kathy Beauregard thinks about the value of our athletic program. The ineptitude displayed with this deal makes me realize why we never had a shot at resigning Fleck during those 4 weeks between the MAC Championship and the Cotton Bowl.
So how much will we sell off WeWillReign when Lester leaves or someone else wants it?

No reason but I assumed we'd be getting six figures for RTB.
How much was Fleck's buyout when he bolted after saying "I'm going back to Kalamazoo"?

Fully agree. Highly hopeful that Lester will keep the brown going and not dip back to black.

The $2m per year package was unprecedented in the MAC, and you can't force him to sign at gunpoint while he was (presumably) back-channeling with Minnesota after their boycott fiasco for over $3m per year. He held the cards. If we couldn't re-sign him with that deal, no MAC school would.
WMU probably had to tip-toe a bit during the RTB transfer negotiation process. Obviously it's known the phrase originated from the death of his son, so WMU wouldn't look too good in the public eye if it even appeared we were trying to play hardball in releasing the slogan.

RE: Fleck and WMU have reached a deal on RTB
The money is $10,000 for five years, but is in the form of a donation specifically to be used for a player scholarship. Thus, Fleck will get to write it off as a charitable donation. He is in a big tax bracket now, so the $50,000 will cost him virtually nothing, and he gets to look like a philanthropist who cares so much about his former team that he continues to give. And he gets the RTB. You have to give it to the guy. He is clever and smart. It even furthers his credibility with his current team.
As I said before, I would have kept the RTB rights. They worked here with these same players, and now its like the school is saying, "you know all the principles and concepts we asked you to focus on so that we were all on the same page playing like a team 24/7? It was all a bunch of BS, but don't worry, the new coach will feed you a bunch of his own crap, so its all good". We hired Fleck to do a job, and he was very good at it. He taught his players a lot, and used phenomenal leadership methods and lessons. But abandoning the valuable tools Fleck created while at WMU is like General Motors allowing a former engineer for the company take the patents for designs he/she made while working for the company. There are a lot of folks who made fun of RTB, but in the end it was a great tool to get kids to invest themselves 100% into doing things the right way on and off the field to accomplish a common goal. And the current players understand it well and relate to it. We gained virtually nothing by letting Fleck take it. I dint expect WMU to be able to sell it to Fleck for much, and frankly I wouldnt think Fleck would have been willing to pay much for it, because he could come up with something else if he needed to. But we could have kept it.

I never really understood the connection to his son. RTB isn't even something Fleck made up. It has always been a common phrase to say, "we all need to row the boat in the same direction" when encouraging a group of people to be organized and in sync with each other in order to achieve a common goal. Fleck used a shorthand "RTB" of that phrase. It worked. The stuff about his kid I think was just a bit of emotional sales. That worked too.

The Athletic Department had nothing to do with the deal. It was legal affairs and the Office of Finance. Don't blame KB, she had nothing to do with it.
Plus, I'm hearing that Minnesota told WMU that they didn't want to use it on their apparel. This deal is with Fleck's agent, not Minnesota. Hard to get six figures out of one guy if the University he's now working for isn't going to use it officially.

I wish we'd have kept it out of spite until we got enough money to rebrand or at least repaint. Just glad to finally turn the page on a very successful and oddly branded era.

Spite gets us nowhere. It's not who we are, nor should it be.

Why wouldn't he? Its a needed tax deduction. This deal will not end up costing him a thing.
