It's interesting to read the comments of NCSU (and other teams' fans) on the subject of hiring potential new head coaches. It's as if they are leafing through a catalog deciding which one they pick out - as if coaches being discussed don't have anything to say about it.

Mullet or not,I don't think Keatts is going to NCSU. If for no other reason than he looks to be the 3rd or 4th choice to lead a team that (in order to be successful) has to out-recruit UNC-Ch, Duke, Louisville, Syracuse, etc. The money would be good, but he can well afford to wait for a job where the money is equally good,he is the first choice, and he isn't behind the recruiting 8 ball from the get go.

In the meantime, who is to say what the upside at UNCW is? NCAA tournament success can mean more money, which in turn can be directed towards Keatts. It happened for Shaka at VCU - why not here? At the extreme end of the optimistic scale, why can't Keatts become Mark Few and make UNCW the Gonzaga of the south?

The Mullet just has too much time on his hands (or should I say, his fins).

RE: NC State to fire Gottfried at end of season
If Keatts can keep UNCW in the NCAA tournament, he can fund his own raises. UNCW would be smart to direct the uptick in NCAA revenues directly to his salary and assistants, and allow the success of the program to fund other upgrades, wants and needs.

Trips to the NCAA increase exposure, applications, donor giving, corporate sponsorship, attendance, etc., etc. The way to look at this is NCAA tournament money is "house money" we wouldn't otherwise have, so why not direct it to the person bringing it in? Word is we can get Keatts to around 750k. If that can get to $1 million in the next 3 years, he may want to stay.

We'll see.

Post of the month right here. Lots of factors go into career decisions. We all love Coach Kevin Keatts and hope he stays as long as it is the best thing for him and his family.

I'm hoping that Keatts takes the advice of pitino and waits for the job that suits him. I don't see him going to an upper level mid major (like Dayton or VCU) and then to a P5 team. I see him jumping right to a P5 job ( if he decides to) that he sees as the right fit. Whether or not that is State is up to him. I'm hoping he's holding out for the Louisville job when it comes open so that we can hold on to him for the next few years.

OR

He can stay right here in Wilmington for his entire career, enjoy the beach and turn us into the best mid-major program in the nation!

Nothing I said about UNCW or Keatts is news to anybody. They got smoked and they are not a very good half court defensive team-check the stats on it. If they offer him the job,I think he takes it in a second. They guy would be a great hire for NCSU.

You'd have to ask CSG06 about that. Such things (banishments) are not in my department. In fact, I'm not sure I have a department.

I just don't understand why anyone would say "he takes it in a second" about any job. As said, there are so many factors that each person has to consider, and we have no idea what other jobs will be available. There are at least 20-25 jobs (not current openings) that would be more attractive than NCSU based on money, facilities, and ability to compete right away. Others have argued that coaches will have confidence in themselves and won't be scared away by Carolina or Duke. If you use that logic, why wouldn't Keatts have confidence in his ability to sustain success at UNCW for another 1-2 years and take one of those 20-25 jobs when they come open?

Classic Mullet. Goes to NCSU boards and tells them Keatts would be an awful hire for them. Comes here and tells us he'd be a great hire for NCSU.

Same old song and dance from the Mullet.

He couldn't wait to come back after his banning. Dude can't take a hint. In fact, it probably will make him even more insufferable. And on the cusp of our 2nd straight Tournament appearance, no less.

No doubt Keatts is THE hot mid-major coach that everyone will want to talk to when your season ends. He has been linked to the openings at Illinois and Missouri as well as NC State. After you guys beat UVA and Florida to get to the Sweet 16, his stock will rise even more! 01-ncaabbs

As firm as I am in my belief that NCSU isn't an elite job, Keatts is more likely to take the State job than Illinois or Missouri.

I follow a lot of Chicago sports professionals, and Keatts isn't high on their list for the Illinois job. He's mentioned for sure, but they want someone with P5 experience. I've heard Buzz Williams name mentioned, and that makes sense to me.

I did NOTsay he would be a awful hire or anything even close to that. I have respect for the what he has done here in Wilmington and I think he will be fine at the next spot he goes to. I did give my opinion on his team this year-they don't play half court but that is not something that should surprise UNCW fans. I don't really care how you feel about it.

They seemed to play fine in spurts in the half court in the CAA vs both William and Mary and CofC.

RE: NC State to fire Gottfried at end of season
Keatts has made two very big changes towards the end of the year that make this team much better.

1. The change from Bryan to Chuck as backup to Cacock improved our defense overall and created a much smaller drop off in play when Cacock is on the bench. Keatts is now strategically sitting Cacock to rest with much more confidence.

2. Talley over Richmond to back up Ingram or to sit Mosely. Talley pushes the ball up the court and can get to the basket to score or draw a foul. Mosely can hit the 3, but Talley has been huge off the bench for a change of pace. He also gets in the face of the offense on defense.

It's easy to forget that neither of these guys played to start the year, with each facing suspension by Keatts. Their return to significant minutes is huge for this team, and makes us much better overall. If they had played against Middle Tennesses, the outcome could have been different. Same for Clemson.
