JMHO: the idea of a "true Western Division" needs BYU or San Diego State (possibly both) in order to succeed. We might grab WichSt or something like that, but I doubt you'll ever see major westward expansion by the AAC without one or both of BYU/SDSU.

SDSU is unlikely IMO. The front range schools UNM, AFA, CSU, and WYO would be an interesting package and the biggest fan bases in those 3 states but I think Wyoming would get bumped and Boise would get the spot.
I'd rather see the MW and AAC work together as I think they could do well with a bowl matchup, scheduling agreement, and even working together on a TV deal. They really have a nice mix of schools in the West where most of the regular folks go to school as opposed to academic elite schools they can't get into and don't relate to in the PAC.
It would never happen but a 4 team playoff with the 2 conferences would be really fun to watch.

It'd be one thing if you were proposing a conference of: CSU/AFA, UNM/UTEP, Houston/Rice, SMU/Tulsa, Wichita St bball
That would be a good regional conference. Before cable tv took over college sports that's what a college athletic conference looked like.
Cheers!

Having schools who duplicate markets only strengthens the conference reach in those areas. Adding schools like Rice or Southern Miss only strengthens the AAC conference in Houston and New Orleans.
Looking at C-USA and the SB now they are completely spread out which means nothing but a travel cost burden for the university and lack of fans for road games. That didn't used to be the case.
Southern Miss isn't in the New Orleans market any more than NMSU is in El Paso's. That said, I agree. Multiple teams in a market adds exposure, especially in smaller conferences.
