I know, but that announcement coupled with the game made for a tough day. I was hoping he remained D.C.

Football pays enough to allow guys (in upper management coaching positions) to do this. Smart for them to focus on their family at this point. Scott Shafer did the same thing...he stayed out for a year and decided to get back in as a DC at the CUSA level (MTSU).

When you have a few million in the bank...you can make decisions like this to step off the treadmill.

Chizik will be back in football in a year I bet. Maybe he'll take a step back from the P5, maybe not.

I don't know if you guys know this or not, but his family is still in Auburn. That's a long haul commute to be with the kids, and nearly impossible for a coach in big time football who is doing his job.

Plus, I think Auburn is still honoring a contract with him and that the payout was reduced by the amount he made at North Carolina, but is payable in full when he is not earning elsewhere. So I think he's still going to get paid as if he is working.

That said TexanMark is likely correct. I don't think he will stay out of coaching for more than a year, two at the most.

RE: Chizik steps down
Gene's twin daughters are freshmen at Auburn, and Jonna was not moving to Chapel Hill and leaving them and uprooting their son.
Good for the Chizik family!
We will miss Gene and his daily walk past the statue of Carolina football legend Charlie "choo choo" Justice, who was Gene's father's best friend growing up in Asheville, NC.
But we are left in good hands as John Papuchis takes over as the Carolina DC. Papuchis has been the linebacker coach at Carolina for the last two seasons and was the Nebraska DC before coming to Chapel Hill.

Strange that he didn't send his daughters to unc and move his wife and son to chapel hill. I mean that is a pretty good setup.

Not really strange. They didn't want to move.

Getting admitted is tough.

Carolina sets 12th consecutive record for first-year applications
Admissions office reports nearly 14 percent increase over last year

(Chapel Hill, N.C. – Jan. 24, 2017) – With the close of the final deadline for first-year admission for Fall 2017, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill announces a 12th consecutive record for first-year applications. The total of 40,792 applications received (as of Jan. 18) reflects an increase of 13.7 percent over last year and the second largest increase within the last 25 years.

“We continue to be humbled by the interest shown in us by so many terrific students from all over the world,” said Stephen Farmer, Vice Provost for Enrollment and Undergraduate Admissions. “We know that these young people have many choices for college, and we are grateful that they are considering Carolina. We will treat every one of them with the greatest care and respect.”

First-year applicants who applied in October will receive their decisions by the end of January; first-year applicants who applied in January will receive their decisions by the end of March.

While first-year application deadlines for Fall 2017 have passed, the University will accept transfer applications from students currently enrolled at other institutions through Feb. 15.

“Transfer admission continues to be a popular option for students who aren’t joining us right out of high school or need more time to get ready,” said Farmer.

The University expects to enroll a first-year class of 4,200 and an additional 800 students as transfer students.
