GS replaces OOC games against Kent St with NMSU
Quote:STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern Athletics Department announced Thursday that it will be making a change to its future non-conference football schedules as it adds a home and home with New Mexico State while removing Kent State from the schedule.

New Mexico State is a familiar foe for Georgia Southern as the two have met three times as members of the Sun Belt Conference. Last year in Las Cruces, Georgia Southern picked up a 22-19 win and the Eagles are currently 3-0 all time against New Mexico State.

This year, Georgia Southern will host New Mexico State in Paulson Stadium in a Sun Belt matchup. New Mexico State will be leaving the SBC after the 2017 football season.

In 2018, the Eagles will travel to Las Cruces to face the Aggies on Oct. 20 and NMSU will return to Statesboro on Oct. 19, 2019. Both of these matchups will be non-conference affairs.

"Kent State approached us in regards to making a change to the status of our scheduled series," said Georgia Southern Director of Athletics Tom Kleinlein. "We respect their request and have terminated the contract with them. New Mexico State is a familiar opponent who was also looking for games, and we are excited to work out this deal with the Aggies. The El Paso and Las Cruces areas are parts of the country our fans have enjoyed traveling to and I have no doubt they will enjoy it again in 2018."

Are you taking a dig at NMSU? Because I would so much rather play NMSU than some MAC team I've never heard of

Good deal for Southern. NMSU is a more recognizable name to fans than Kent, and it gives NMSU an extra home game for 2018.

not GS fault, Kent wanted out and GS had to find another team, still, even though Kent wasn't going to move the needle for GS fans, NMSU is going to have GS fans dancing in the streets either, even if they are familiar. Kinda just an even tradeoff

Not sure it's more recognizable. When I hear Kent State I think about Nick Saban, Antonio Gates, James Harrison, Julian Edelman.

When I hear New Mexico State I think of............................

Actually, while I'm happy that NMSU got a good game.....its not good to replace an 'easy MAC' OOC team with an independent from a G5 payout perspective.

Yea no one down south cares about Northern private schools. I personally respect Kent but the fact that NMSU has its State in the name will bring out an extra thousand fans

The dig is at Southern's scheduling in general.

Fair enough, but you didn't think of Jack Lambert, so your opinion is invalid and I now question everything you say. 05-mafia05-mafia05-mafia

With state in its name I doubt it's private.

They're Kent STATE University. They're not private!

When I think of Kent State, sadly, I think of this: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kent_State_shootings

Also, on a lighter, happier note, I think of their basketball team made it to the Elite 8 as a 10 seed, with an upset of 2nd seeded Alabama in the 2002 NCAA Tournament.

That's first thing I think of.

FWIW, Kent State was an OT MAC championship game loss away from a BCS bowl not too many years ago. (I think they went on to lose to stAte in their bowl game...)

As a fan, I'd much prefer to travel to New Mexico rather than Ohio. No preference as to which one comes to Statesboro.

Yep, one of our two wins in program history over Top 25 teams. (Hi Troy!)
